I explained this, not seeing women in high risk roles in shooters IS realistic.
I added my posts only a few seconds after yours, ok?

But in certain games it's NOT realistic. I'm thinking mainly of ArmA2, not female pilots, no female medical support, no females at the base even. In reality you're guarenteed to see at least one female at a military base.
That is true, but how many shooters have you played that involve being at base long enough to notice the bit parts?

I guess if you have to play a section of the game at base they should at least have a few women doing something.
Lolz. With Arma2 you're usually at base quite alot, even building it xD It focuses on realism too so its one of them things you'd expect (Since it's labelled as a mil-sim) :3.
Never played it. Sounds like a fun game though.

Still, most shooters today have you on the front all the time in high risk missions.

Yeah, I like some games which are like that but when it comes to military games I love quite a bit of realism where every action matters and the fate of the world doesn't depend on you. Even though there is little scripted gameplay in arma 2 it does have it's unintentional epic moments. There was one level I was playing as a squad leader for a russian guerilla squad and me and 3 men went out in a civilian car at night. A few mins while driving we litterally screeched to a halt when we saw an enemy APC driving right for us. I got my team to disembark and we made a run for the hills, sadly out sniper got picked of by the APC before we all got to prone. We waited, out heart beating as we heard the thunderous thud of the APC's turret, the bullets hammering into the soil besides us. We called air support and it was beautiful seeing the APC explode as our comrades overhead saved up. T'was epic. I love them types of moments where something unscripted is just so damn epic xD

Ahem... anyway, I got a little off topic there, sorry.

OT: I'm not too sure how male players would react to killing women in games. It's really up to the developers on what to do.

Don't bother getting pissy about this, I am stating my opinion. I'm a girl so don't think the basis of this is "sexist", or whatever.
It's possible to be sexist and still be female. Ever heard of self-loathing, closeted homosexuals? Same principals at work here. And what you're saying definitely has a sexist vibe to it.

I'm female and a gamer, and I've seen a bit of effort recently going into making female characters with just as strong personalities and characterization as their male counterparts...in some games. And in others, it's obviously the women are just there for objectification. How can you not be offended by this? It's because there are so many straight male gamers that the game industry should be attempting to make strong female characters. Because women in real life are very rarely like those in many video games. I feel the same way about gay characters in games, and minorities as well. The fact of the matter is, very few characters outside of the straight, white male persona are given fully fleshed-out personalities and histories.

Games like Mass Effect (with strong female Ashley Williams) and Dragon Age Origins (strong female Wynne who is definitely not a sex object) show us that it can be done. But it's really sad that they're the only two examples I can think of off the top of my head right now. I don't think it's pissy or overly feminist to ask for equal representation and characterization.

Simple: common sense says 'Stay away from angry bulls because they are dangerous. Climbing onto their backs will not calm them down.'
"Common sense" also says you shouldn't jump out of airplanes. So what?

The competition only proves who can stay on top of an angry bull for the longest amount of time. I really don't understand why we risk serious bodily harm just to prove that we can do something that really isn't a very good idea no matter how you look at it.
People do things like that because they like it, because they want to show it can be done or just because they can. You clearly don't comprehend human nature.
No, I don't. Why do we like to do these things? Why do we want to prove it can be done? It makes no sense.

Couldn't really give less of a shit what the person on the other end of my party has between their legs, so long as they don't suck at the game. There's no classification for "white gamer", "straight gamer", "blonde gamer", etc, so why should there be one for female gamer? You're a gamer. Period. As such, your main demand should be that your games are immersive and fun to play, not whether the protagonists are male or female.

I find the whole "girl gamer" mentality adopted by developers (I'm looking at you, Ubisoft) and GameStop displays to be insulting to women - and I'm a guy.

Little Susie wants to play a video game, Mom? Give her something good, like Mario or Professor Layton, not that Imaginz crap.

Just the other day I had a conversation with one of my female friends about the advantages of singleplayer versus multiplayer. The only difference I can see between male and female gamers is that I know much fewer of the latter.

But most of all how 98% of the girls i've met gaming, and of whom some are good mates are nothing like this and just as jazzed off about it all.
Yep, exactly. It's (girl gamers behaving different purely to play up to stereotypical expectations) not just annoying for the majority of guys who don't give a flying f@#k what gender you are, it's also incredibly annoying for the girls who're playing games just to have fun. Two of my regular gamer buddies are female and not the butch female gamer stereotype, both are incredibly beautiful (and both are pretty much the only two girls in London who regularly wear dresses as opposed to trousers). Neither one of these two ladies like the way that some girls behave online. It's just annoying.

EDIT: I wish this thread had a poll along the lines of "How many people think the OP is wrong".

Um why are you posting here and invading my space and time, this gaming forum is a "guy" thing
Forums aren't a guy thing, that's drinking and fighting.
You've clearly not met any of my female friends.
Dah, we're just throwing sterotypes at eachother. Never generalise gender, because somewhere on this giant spherical object we call home there will be a [Lady/Gentleman] pretty much the same as you mentally.

Lets all be trendy. Generalising gender is ''so 70's''

Eh screw it.

It's sexist to think guy talk to you baddly as because your female.

Your in the locker room, guys will be guys and treat you just the same. Don't want the towel smack to the ass and be called a wuss? Don't be one of the gamers.

It's not whats between your legs, your accepted in untill the demand to be treated equal cross the line of treated more than equal. That's normally the problems.

As for games, they market to their aduience. Why there is no Cooking papa, Ken's horse adventures ect

Look, if you're going to be a prick, please don't go on the Escapist. She has a perfectly vaild point. I take it from your post that you're a sexist idiot, so I won't bother with anything other than reporting you.

I hate to criticise what is technically my own kind, being a girl who is fairly into games and all, but this is really getting to me.
First of all, your status as a gamer is not defined by what is between your legs so you are not a "girl gamer", you are a gamer just like everyone else who plays games is and always will be.

developers are out to get profits.
Edited to show the parts of your statement that I agree with. The whole "muscling in on guy territory" still sounds wrong to me.

Yet you still wasted the effort in responding...good job dummy.

This is the same as women expecting men to treat them kindly. Now, I'm not trying to be a dick here, but if you demand equal rights as men, why is it still against moral code for me to hit a girl? You are of the same standing as I am now, why can you hit me but I can't hit back? Also, why should I attempt to be a gentleman for you? You can do everything I can do now, hold the fucking door for me for a change.
Thoughts?
I'm a girl and I agree, even while still being a little hypocritical. Ex. I want to be paid the same amount as a man (even though we still get 75 cents for every dollar a man makes) BUT I do not want to have to go to war or be drafted. Heh, maybe I should look at that lost quarter as "staying alive money". I digress though. I agree with you on your other points. My first boyfriend told me what one of his friends told him: "The way I know if a girl is worth going out with or not is this...when you open the car door for her, does she lean over the drivers seat in order to unlock/open the door for you when you get there?"
I thought that was an awesome point, and I try to open the car door for guys when I remember.

Wanting respect and wanting to be treated differently are two very different things. I don't tolerate assholes whether they're men or women.

im new to the escapist please be gentle but i understand completely and i agreeit wouldn't hurt for girls to have more recognition as gamers and there be more female main characters in games i actually wish i could one day meet a female gamer but the search goes on
