"The schoolgirl's mother is now calling for all unmanned salons to be shut down as a matter of urgency."

Here we go again!

One person is retarded and now the parents are on a crusade!

Tanning salons are a stupid idea to begin with. They only stem from the vanity that has been established as being "part of being a woman."

It's fucking ridiculous.
This, honestly this vanity and obsession with the "perfect tan" sickens me.
The big irony is that I guarentee you that it won't be too long until having a tan is no longer the hot and sexy look, back in the victorian times (and for quite a while afterwards) being pale and looking slightly ill all the time was considered to be very attractive (it showed that you didn't do physical work and thus were rich and high in status), recently, the tanned and weathered look has become popular (although it now recieves a lot of flak and bad press which will eventually result in being pale and frail being the new look).

Yes, it is sad that this child has gone through what she has (and went through it because she was curious) but at the end of the day it was an unmanned booth so whatever way you look at it she did it to herself and is fully responsible for her own actions.
But they also thought fat people were attractive too... like the fatter the better. I really don't think tan and athleticism is going to go away as a fashion fad for quite some time. The way our society is structured with the most visible role models being athletes and actors, I don't think the tan and athletic look will be going anywhere for a while. A REALLY long while...

I think there's responsiblity on all 4 parties in this case. The parent for not educating the kid and informing them about the dangers of tanning, the cousin that was with the kid for more than likely giving the kid the idea or encouraging them, the kid herself for not using her judgement about this and the company itself. However, if the company has tons of signage up noting the dangers and the age limit, it's really not their fault... it'd be hard to say without more evidence.

This is just a knee-jerk reaction from a mother-hen who has had one of her chicks damaged. It'll be interesting to see what actually happens down the line as a result however...

Yeah, it should have been monitored, but I'll just bet that that girl didn't even get yelled at by her mom. The mom just went straight to blaming the tanning salons "Of course it isn't her fault". Right.

first off a 10 year old shouldn't be on a tanning bed and second off no one should be. if u want to get a tan why not try using that big ball in the sky... what was it called again....o yeah the sun

Ugh, reminds me of that film with the rollercoaster.
Final Destination 3 - urgh that was disgusting lol
The DVD had a feature where you could let her escape the tanning bed all cooked, and IIRC she went to the hospital.. it was an interesting feature that changed the movie based on whether you, as the viewer, chose to save certain people, thereby making death "skip" them and continue down the list, ala, what happens in all the movies.

I agree that the things should be supervised since they're clearly potentially extremely dangerous, but this also seems to be another "survival of the fittest" situations.

So yes, someone should be watching the machines. But, the dumb ***** girl did it to herself. It did say you have to be over 16, after all. Lesson learned. No big deal.

Wow, really incredible, 70% of her body burned? I think those sunbeds should be watched when someone goes in, to avoid 70% of their body burn.

Good. Good good good. What the fuck was a 10 year old doing thinking she needed a tan? Learned her lesson. And what THE FUCK was the mother doing letting her 10 year old run around unsupervised?! She's fucking TEN lady! Not 16!

I was going to say something about natural selection, than I realised she's only ten AND she did not die. I know where the blame lies, HER MOTHER. So, you let your ten year old to go to some fair with some retard, which if it was open at the time she probubly would have been abducted by one of the festering pedophiles, or something else terrible. So, how old was this cousin? Old enough to look after a ten year old?

BAD PARENTING.

Once again, somebody screws up somehow and the rest of the world has to pay for it. Like when I went skiing last winter, I wasnt allowed to use skipoles because the last time a minor had skipoles on the mountain he got in a fight with another minor and lost his eyesight. Now all minors have to pay for this morons mistake.

Common sense really ought to get the better of her you'd think. Sunbed's don't just give you a roasting, they can cause cancer as well, and are more likely to cause cancer than lying on the beach with no suncream on. She may as well have just roasted herself in the oven if she was that stupid not to wonder when to get out of there, even if it's automated.

I honestly don't see the fixation on tans, I mean fair enough if you have been on holiday or its been really sunny, but there's people in my school thats skin is now 100% leather. Although about the article, it is for over 16's so you know... not really there fault, more hers really...

Why do bad parents with stupid kids always think everyone else is just as dumb as they are?

Tanning salons are stupid to begin with... 10 year olders that fry themselves in them... It's just natural selection...

I do criticize one thing about the place though, and that far is their fault, didn't anyone consider unwise to let a 10 year old use a tanning salon at all? Don't they have ANYONE working there at all? Shouldn't they request an ID to verify the 16 year old age limit? I don't mean manning the machine but just looking over the place at all?
That's kind of the whole point. The OP says the salon is unmanned.
By "unmanned" I figured they meant the actual machines, as in, they had nobody checking how long each people stayed or anything... But figured they'd have at least 1 person at the door or something... More so to prevent vandalism of the machinery than out of care for people, but nonetheless. I maintain my original point, they have some fault for not having anyone there in case a child wonders off or something, but she is 10...

Captain Blackout said:
BTW you heartless nightmares ... This girl is at a huge risk for skin cancer now for making a mistake. A ten year made a mistake. Yes, existentially speaking it's her fault. Morally speaking the tanning salon should be paying her medical bills for years to come.
Ain't that a *****... I'm physically incapable of empathizing or even sympathizing with stupidity... IF she was 6, and wondered off in there, I'd feel sorry. If she had accidentally gotten trapped in there for the whole time, I'd feel sorry for her. If there was someone watching her, supposed to keep track of time, if she was expecting to be monitored, and said person didn't, resulting in her getting fried, I'd feel sorry.

This is "none of the above" though. She's 10, old enough to know sticking yourself in a giant grill for a quarter of an hour may not be a good idea. She knew she wasn't being monitored. She should have figured out there's a reason the machine ends after the time it does. It wasn't a simple mistake, it was one pretty fucking massive dickmove after another.

wow, you read my mind
