I think McDonalds has clearly shown us that the best solution to this problem is to put a big sticker on the tanning beds stating, "Caution:Hot."

It takes about 4 hours in direct summer sunlight for me to get a tan. Is it attractive? Yes. Is it worth it? You bet. Does it help get women? Absolutely.

Where was I going with this? Oh yeah, she's 10. At 10 I never said "know what sounds right to me? Going into a tanning salon." Let's see... at 10 years old... it was 1995... oh yes: I was figuring out these damn codes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat_3

I feel bad for the girl, being a burn survivor myself, and unless you have had massive burns, you can't understand the kind of pain involved. Now with that out of the way, it is my opinion that if we can't outlaw tanning booths altogether, to quote Max, "leathery skin go", then the least that should be required is to have them supervised.

Her own fault, altough there really should be some kind of failsafe that prevents them from being used 10 min+ in the same hour.

My only question is why anyone would want a tan, fake or not.
Leathery skin go!

Well, in this case, no skin, I guess, but that isn't very polite.
If you must uglify yourself, someone should at least watch you doing it, to make sure you don't go overboard.
I hate people who want a tan
Go being being Dark Skin !

Tanning salons are a stupid idea to begin with. They only stem from the vanity that has been established as being "part of being a woman."

It's fucking ridiculous.
This, honestly this vanity and obsession with the "perfect tan" sickens me.
The big irony is that I guarentee you that it won't be too long until having a tan is no longer the hot and sexy look, back in the victorian times (and for quite a while afterwards) being pale and looking slightly ill all the time was considered to be very attractive (it showed that you didn't do physical work and thus were rich and high in status), recently, the tanned and weathered look has become popular (although it now recieves a lot of flak and bad press which will eventually result in being pale and frail being the new look).

Yes, it is sad that this child has gone through what she has (and went through it because she was curious) but at the end of the day it was an unmanned booth so whatever way you look at it she did it to herself and is fully responsible for her own actions.

It's a shame the 10 year old feels she needs to deface her body like this. At 10 kids should be climbing trees and thinking the opposite sex is 'icky' instead of trying to look older and more attractive.

This. Assuming the girl is able to read, it must have been hard for her not to notice the big sign on the door indicating that she really shouldn't have been in there using the tanning beds. So, her predicament gets a big "slashcry" from me in that regard. A "slashcry" means I don't really care, by the way.

It does make me wonder though why these tannings salons are unmanned - seems like a recipe for disaster if you ask me. Perhaps better to have them manned than shut them down - that way some people will actually get a job in this wonderfully prosperous nation.

Yeah, because movie theaters would let a 10 year old see chainsaw massacre, obviously they would be wise enough to follow the R18+ only directions.

BTW you heartless nightmares ... This girl is at a huge risk for skin cancer now for making a mistake. A ten year made a mistake. Yes, existentially speaking it's her fault. Morally speaking the tanning salon should be paying her medical bills for years to come.
Ain't that a *****... I'm physically incapable of empathizing or even sympathizing with stupidity... IF she was 6, and wondered off in there, I'd feel sorry. If she had accidentally gotten trapped in there for the whole time, I'd feel sorry for her. If there was someone watching her, supposed to keep track of time, if she was expecting to be monitored, and said person didn't, resulting in her getting fried, I'd feel sorry.

This is "none of the above" though. She's 10, old enough to know sticking yourself in a giant grill for a quarter of an hour may not be a good idea. She knew she wasn't being monitored. She should have figured out there's a reason the machine ends after the time it does. It wasn't a simple mistake, it was one pretty fucking massive dickmove after another.
I agree with Captain Blackout, while I sympathise with your lack of sympathy, I try to pride myself on being heartless, this is going a little too far. The child was unsupervised, was that her fault? If you can't even forgive a 10 year old for being a little foolish especially when they are out without parental supervision and with a pocket full of money, then perhaps you need to reconsider your own, high and mighty status.

When I was ten I don't think I even knew suntanning places existed let alone their dangers. This is one of the few occasions I think sueing is acceptable. Unmanned sun tan facilities? Are these only in America? High time these should be shut down or at least staffed.

Coin operated sun beds? That such a terrible idea how didn't they see this coming. I've been to a place like this once (my family made me for a vacation don't ask) and there was a person there who would tell you how long you should be in there for and control the beds. Cooking yourself in a machine is risky business I can't believe these things exist.

I remember there was a stir up some time ago over people tanning obsessively (tanorexia). I thought they took some measures to prevent it. Or at least they did in the netherlands.

So a mother wasn't paying proper attention to her child, and to deflect criticism and charges from being directed at her own negligence, she goes on a crusade against self-serve tanning beds.

Natural Selection, where art thou?

This kid will spend her life suffering because of her stupidity. That IS as it should be. The mother, should be locked away for criminal negligence. End of issue.
Exactly, and from the article:
"She was under-age but there was no staff there to stop her from using it.

"And there was no-one to give advice on using these potentially dangerous machines."

My addition: There was no parent there to give guidance either, twit.

Pretty much my opinion.

God I love being pale.
High five!

I'm the palest person I know.

I laughed hard when I found out a friend from college went on a sunbed and peeled for about 2 weeks straight.

But I don't see the big deal with trying to get a tan, just one use of a tan bed increases your risk of getting skin cancer by 50%, can't remember where I read/ saw it.

This reminds me of a story in the local newspaper of some kid going on the sun bed and ended up being burnt so bad she ended up in hospital. Kids these days are stupid and try to be brown as possible. Spray tan = safe.

Saying that, I've never had a tan before...

EDIT: Also, there was a "myth" on Mythbusters that some lass used the sun beds so much in a week before her wedding she microwaved herself..

Tanorexia? That's one of the best things I've heard all day.

So, you've only eaten one sunbed this week, and you still think you're fat?

Yes I think tanning salons should be monitored at all times (or shut completely).
A 10 year old shouldn't have been there in the first place.
First part I don't agree with that leads to your second part what is absoulutely right.
What the hell did 10 year old in there ?
