I'm currently playing Final Fantasy VI, which recently came out on the Wii's Virtual Console, if you can get over the fact that is still has random encounters and the story is bit silly it's more than worth your eight bucks: it's really big, the music is awesome, it has tons of playable characters and actually quite a deep battle system. Also interesting is that halfway through an unexpected twist occurs that has a huge impact on gameplay. Besides on the VC Final Fantasy VI is available for the SNES, PlayStation and Game Boy Advance. I can also remember recently hearing there was going to be an iPad version, but I could be confusing it with another game.
As far as other Final Fantasies go I really liked part VII and IX but don't really care for the rest; part XIII is just plain awful.
My personal favourite RPG is Tales of Symphonia: I just really like its style, battle system, storyline, characters and music. It's also really, really long and has tons of sidequests. If you're even slightly a JRPG fan and own a GameCube or Wii you have no reason not to acquire this game right now.
I can also really recommend the Paper Mario games, they are all really good and really fun affectionate parodies of the Mario franchise; they also have quite a different take on the RPG genre. Definately check them out.
And if you really want something different: try Earthbound or, better yet, its sequel Mother 3. Both are unlike anything you've every played before and I think can be considered as postmodern art. They're also very funny.
Unfortunately Earthbound hasn't got any re-releases (and due to copyright issues probably will never get any) and was never released in Europe, and Mother 3 never made it out of Japan (luckily there is a fan translation). These are rare cases in which I consider piracy to be justified.
I can't really give you any advice as far as Western RPG's go, since the only one I really got into was Oblivion (which you already played), and that was probably because that one was what hardcore WRPG fans would call dumbed down compared to its predecessors, so yeah...
