Compare yourself to a heavy smoker that you know. Pick out all their unpleasant attributes. That might help.

I've been smoking for about 3 years now, but thankfully I've never really gone above 2 a day.
Time to quite soon, methinks. Before I turn into my mother.
It's a disgusting dependency and I hate the physical effects.

I've been smoking for around 4 years now because I thought it would be cool to start when I was in Secondary school, as you do.

I've started smoking more and more recently and now it's got to the point where I'm smoking upwards of 20 a day which when you're 17 isn't very good.

Have any of you quit smoking, and if so how did you do it?

Any help is appreciated.
Imagine dying of cancer, imagine having lung cancer, or cancer of the gums/throat and having to have your jaw cut out.
Imagine being stuck to an iron lung all day, or being pushed around in a wheel chair because your circulation is completely fucked and your legs won't work properly.
Imagine losing your vision, or having one of those disgusting smokers coughs.
Imagine being the fuckwit who lights up in a small area and everyone else having to share their poisonous toxic inhalant.
Imagine the effect your smoking has on your teeth and breath, and your personal hygiene in general. Imagine that your smoking has affected other peoples health.
Imagine having to pay 50 plus dollars a week when you work and have fuck all money left over to have to pay for smokes.
Imagine looking back when you're about to die painfully and embarrassingly of something you could have prevented when you were young.

Carry a bottle of water with you. Whenever you want a smoke put a bit of water in your mouth, not a lot mind, just a bit, then suck it down. I don't mean drink it either, inhale it. You'll cough for a bit, or die if you didn't listen and used too much, either way you won't want another smoke for a while. Just keep doing this and after about 3 days your brain will associate the feeling of semi-drowning with cigarette cravings, then you're set.
Now thats the best idea ever.
Listen to this guy.

I smoke and I'm awesome :(

I've been smoking about 3 years and then I recently moved into a house where I can't smoke indoors, I've gone fine without feeling the need to go outside. I either just wait till I need to go out for something or just don't smoke.
1 month ago I was on about 15/20 a day, moving kind of forced to cut down.

I don't feel the need to quit, I'm healthy and enjoy smoking.

The most important thing is to ask yourself am I really, really ready to do this? Keep in mind this is one of the hardest things you will ever do its not going to be poof craving gone for days, weeks or even months. Make sure you are fully dedicated, have something to keep you occupied and can avoid stress and anxiety as much as possible if your in the middle of something important in your life wait it out.

Around 4 years ago I quit I was smoming upto 40 a day now I only smoke if im extremley stressed. Firstly I would advise you to say what can I realisticly do your up to 20? Try only 10 and then work down when you feel your ready try and finaly move off the weaning. Tried rollups? less tar, less nicotine less taste can help you kill the feel of doing it, nicotine inhalers better than the patch I would say you look like a twat with one but its alot healthier for you. But overall it's all down to willpower you really need to say this is my last one and mean it, and remember all the positives quiting is going to bring you. Food will taste better, youll be in better shape, your teeth will look cleaner, and you will save absolute fortunes.

I smoked for 12 years. Three months ago I smoked the last of my pack, and said I quit. I relapsed and smoked one three days later while drunk. Aside from that I have not touched a cigarette since.

It took almost two months before I did not reach for my pack on the center console of my truck when I hopped in. Breaking the habit was the only hard part. I never felt the physical withdraw symptoms people say they have.

People would occasionally say I should quit. I always told them I would quit when I was ready. It was a crutch for stress for me. When times got really stressful I might smoke as much as a pack and a half in a day.

I'm trying to give up as well dude so trust me you aren't alone , my recommendation would be find something to kill that 5-10 minutes a day that would normally be spent having a fag, play a game , work out a puzzle, anything really.
Hope this helps!

I can quit my habit at any moment I choose. But I won't until I find an alternative to stres relief and mental clarity in the same instant.

I quit 2 months ago. Pure cold turkey.

This, given I was on 20 Marlies a day for 17 years shows it can be done, but it's not easy.

Going through it step by step.
Remove every single piece of smoking ecoutrements as possible. That includes Rizlas, matches, flecks of tobacco, dog-ends(stogies?) because you will try and use them.
Soak all of them in water so you can't re-use them. (Try to make sure it's impossible to dry them out)
Eliminate all the anti-smoking leaflets you can (They just want to make you smoke again) and spray all your smoking areas with strong deodorants.

Now wait: Make up your mind to fully give up, totally. This may take a few cigarettes to lock in, so after every one, clean up again.

Then stop.

Now, you have two days of feeling like you're going to smash something and two weeks of feeling like a total failure to go through, so utilize any trick listed above to get you through that. I personally use a pint of water everytime you want a cig.

If you do pick up a cig again, slap yourself. Hard.
If you light it, light the wrong end.
If you inhale, make yourself throw up.

Your lungs will hurt, your senses will overwhelm you, you will start shaking and having headaches. Anything your body can do to slap you about.

And then, after about 14 days...

Peace

I can now walk into a room with people smoking and chat to them without making snide remarks or desperately craving one.

However, 2 things:
1) Don't become a smoke nazi: It's all too easy to justify horrific prejudice against these people so remember when you were like that.
2) You have stopped smoking: That doesn't mean the occasional one, or that one "just to get you through". Stopped. Finito. Quit. If you can write down exactly what the first 2 days felt like, all the better as it will remind you.

But, even if you've been stopped 40-50 years, there still will be that time when the sweet intake of air tempts you. Just listen to the mucous-swathed cough of someone afterwards first.

Smoking is smelly. Once you realise this you will stop.
And stay well clear of well meaning people who have no idea what smoking is really like.

My method of quitting was both accidental & unorthodox. I had no desire to quit, the thought just hadn't crossed my mind at the time. Anyway, after getting in touch with an old friend who I hadn't seen in years he invited me to a house-warming party, I knew there would be smokers & drugs et al - it was just that kind of party - so I went there with my tobacco etc. and got wrecked, stoned and spent most of the night tripping. After going to sleep at around 6:30am I woke at about 11:00am feeling very much worse for wear; it felt as though a blacksmith has set up shop inside my head and that my lungs up to my throat had been used as a bonfire - most smokers will have experienced the same sort of feeling at some time or another (not necessarily with the hangover, that's just an added bonus) - so throughout the rest of the day I could hardly even look at a cigarette let alone actually smoke one. The next day I had about one or two. This went on for a few days and then it dawned on me: if I'm only smoking one or two a day then why not stop smoking altogether? I didn't tell anyone that I was stopping - I knew that my parents wouldn't notice - so after a while I stopped getting cravings and now I don't smoke. Of course there were (and are still, though very, very rarely are) times where I would like a cigarette but the desire is so little that it can easily be ignored or forgotten if I do something to take my mind of it.

As for any other little tips all I can think of would be to have some chewing gum when you want a cigarette and do something/anything to take your mind off smoking.

I've been smoking for 3 years myself and I don't smoke nearly as much as anyone else I know however I feel the effects probably moreso than other people considering I used to have severe asthma. For the moment I'm slowly weening myself off of them by taking "days off" usually on sundays since I don't have anything going on that day anyway. It's been a bit of a help.

I never quite understood how anyone associates smoking with being cool though. I only started because I was stressed out.
