Oh my god, another medical melodrama from Glenn Beck. Greeeeat. >.< I know I'm not supposed to wish these kinds of things on people, but I hope to god it becomes permanent. Maybe then he can't abuse his voice, both literally and figuratively, to spread his bullshit. Between his show getting cancelled and now his voice going to hell, maybe god's plan is for him to shut the hell up.

I got about seven minutes through it.

Honestly: very mixed emotions. The human in me feels badly for him. I will accept for the moment that he was sincere.

But at the same time I kind of want to shake him.

This is a perfect example of what I call the 'Yardstick Of The Universe' trope.

Now he's realized he said hurtful things and wants to take them back. Now everyone should live in peace and harmony and just get along. Now we should focus on the important things and not divisiveness.

Well Mr. Beck, you are /not/ the yardstick of the universe. We don't all run on your moral and emotional timeline. Stop being so bloody narcissistic. That was always your problem in the first place, and I don't see any evidence of that changing here.

Some of us realized a long time ago what you are saying, and I'm sure people in your own life tried to hammer these lessons home to you in the past. Some of us may have our own decades of struggle and self-reflection and spreading of hatred to go through to reach the lofty moral summit you've just climbed.

Your 'Eureka' moment means precisely fuck-all to anyone else, except maybe for once you'll actually shut up and think before you speak.

The cynic in me rather doubts you will, unfortunately.

Good, about time something shut him up. However the blessed silence will soon be broken, no doubt there are plenty of disciples ready to take his place. Though they may lack his mental instability, they will surely make up for it with zeal.

Edit: Well...so i watched the whole thing. He claims he want's to make a change? Well, I hope he is sincere. He has said some insane things in the past, I hope he can become a positive force, and help undo some of the damage he's done.

And now, for the really insensitive comment:

Sorry, who is this guy again?

I'll say two things:

1. That video was actually pretty bittersweet. Not bad.

2. If he's forced to write his stuff down and send it past an editor, he ends up refining his insane ramblings into something coherent and worth looking at. "An Inconvenient Book" is good example: I don't agree with a lot of it, but at least it tries. Maybe his voice loss could be a heck of a blessing in disguise.

Glenn Beck losing his voice? That's it, I'm considering this a miracle and becoming a Christian! Hook me up, Jesus.

Or instead of being vindictive you could take the high road and at least give the man a chance. It's not like you have something to lose by doing so. Be cynical if you please, I sure as hell will. With that said though, always be willing to give others a chance to learn and grow, always keep an open mind, otherwise, you become no better than the zealous ignorant partisans you'd probably say you dislike.
I'm not sure I said anything particularly vindictive. I wished him no ill at all. I'm all for giving people second chances, that wasn't what I was annoyed by.

Let me think of a better example: If you've been a smoker for ten years, and you quit, I'm truly happy for you. But having quit gives you no moral standing to run around telling other people /they/ have to quit. You have /less/ moral standing than a non-smoker, because you smoked for ten years. It was fine when you did it.

And that's kind of what Beck is doing in that video, whether he means to or not.

He's made a lifetime's living out of dividing people, and now he's had a revelation and wants everyone to just get along and stop being mean to each other. That's lovely - really, it is. I wish we could all just get along. But for him, of all people, to be preaching a message of tolerance and acceptance makes my teeth grind. It's not a particularly noble reaction on my part, just a human one.

I sincerely hope he'll prove my cynicism wrong and this won't be another 'vick's vapor rub under the eyes' emotional moment from him. It will take a bit more than a ten minute video to do so.

I always get him mixed up with John Glenn, US astronaut, for some reason.

I am trying to think of a better way of saying this but my first thought was; Good. I can't think of anything more to say than that.

Then maybe with his new perspective on life he'll be less of an asshole, like he did that one time, then got better and immediately became an asshole again.

Mmm Glen beck. Well that is someone known for allot of hot air. He even has his own online university.. seriously.. he is milking the cow. But hey that is how it goes right.. if you are successfull even at something like that.. milk it.

Well even without voice he will still have his biggest love, the chalkboard. Ah the joy to see all those mad ideas being put on the chalk board.

Look both left and right have their blowhards and people who are odd. That is how it goes..

Glenn well he is an odd one. I am sure he will bounce up one way or another.
After all he is to is EXTREME for FOXNEWS. Yeah.. wow.. if you fail their "fair and balanced" check.

He will retain some of his audience.. after all didn't he go to a payforview format. He will have enough money to have it nice don't worry.

Gotta say. There is more hate in the replies in this thread than I ever heard comming from Glen Beck. The man is going through a hard medical time and there is very little human sympathy to be had here. Isn't the left supposed to be about helping and supporting others? Or is it like the right in everyone for themselves? Reading through this thread I couldn't tell the difference between the two.

And before the flames start let me clairify. I'm a independent.

As much as I think most of what comes out of his mouth is shit, losing one's voice must suck real hard, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
I lost my voice for a couple of days once. It was one of the most aggravating times of my life, to say the least. I would say it made me scream, but obviously I couldn't.

That was nice and all...but let's see if he actually changes. We'll see in time if this is an actual change of his format, or if this is just a reaction because of the NSA thing. If the former, then maybe his site won't be classified as a comedy site anymore. If the latter, then we won't have to wait long for him to be shouting about the end of the country and being horribly pejorative.

Hope this hasn't already been posted... It's a few days old.

Someone lost their voice! A bit ironic.

I've never really liked the guy, but I've always had some weird form of respect for him.

Anyways... thoughts?
That "speech" is surprisingly good. Beck's always had a gift for wordplay, and it's nice to see it turned toward a half-decent goal this time around. It really seems like he's made one hell of a turn around from the last time I've seen him in the public domain.

He's got a fairly good point too. Hopefully the core message of it gets out a bit more.

"Left" and "Right" are equally fucked up, and are scarily similar in many ways. Which is mostly down to human nature. At the end of the day, people identify with a group and anyone not in that group is treated as a hostile outsider. It's an instinct I really hope we can grow past someday.

Like Beck himself said, both parties are horrendously corrupt. They both want to expand their own power and areas of influence at the expense of the people they are supposed to be representing. I don't see how anyone can support any of them, but them's the breaks I guess.
