Try Darker than Black or Xam'd: Lost Memories.

Darker than Black is essentially Chinese electric Batman in the best conceivable way. It strikes me as sci-fi, but is really a dark superhero show.

Xam'd: Lost Memories is fantasy but incredible. I can't really describe it, but it's worth checking out.

Both are 26 episodes long and amazing in English.

Darker than Black is free on Youtube in English and Japanese. Xam'd: Lost Memories is up for streaming on Netflix.

Baccano!. 16 episodes of the most well put together show I've ever seen. Not sci-fi, but just damn good. Also the Tower of Druaga series is really good. I think it's 32 episodes in total. Just make sure to watch all the way through episode 2 because the first one is not a good example of what the show is like at all.

Death Note. It's the only anime other than Code Geass I have really enjoyed... (it kind of has a similar premise too, since the main character is the villain).
I agree. Definitely watch Death Note. It's a great sci-fi-ish show, only 37 episodes with a solid story line. It's definitely my favorite anime.

I'll agree with Death Not and also recommend a series called Black Butler. It's only 24 or 25 episodes long and it's alternately hilarious and creepy.

Panty and Stocking was disturbing to watch. I liked the art style, very Powerpuff Girl-esque, but the entire premise was just to WHATTHEFUCK worthy for me.

OT: Samurai Champloo*, Michiko and Hatchin, Tiger & Bunny, Cowboy Bebop*. Only Cowboy Bebop has any sci-fi element to it though (Tiger & Bunny too, if you dig mecha-ish superheroes and stuff), sorry, but the others are pretty mature and are all less than 26 episodes. They're all really awesome with damn good animation (a rarity in anime, jesus), fight scenes, AND likable, relatable characters. How many anime do you know that have a combination of that?!

*=are English dubbed (which are damned good, way better than the Japanese ones actually)

Let me be (one of) the first to say: please use the search function before you make a thread.

Besides that; .Hack is pretty awesome and unique.
I did.

Nothing really jumped out at me so i thought to put a list of stuff i like in lieu of an anime version of jinni.com or pandora.com.
I never search for them my self, but "anime recommendation threads" are the most common type of thread on The Escapist, so I would expect thousands of search results.
- My bad if that isn't the case.
Plenty of threads just nothing within them that really fell within my specifications of what i'd like to see.

I mean, if anyone knows of a website that recommends anime based on certain criteria i'd be chuffed.

But for now it looks like crowdsourcing will have to do.

I need something to fill the hours of work where the phone isn't ringing.

As for what i like, here's a list of some i've been watching and enjoying lately

Gundam 00
Rin; Daughters of Mnemosyne
Ergo Proxy
Code Geass
Tenga Toppen Gurren Laggan
Planetes
Ghost in the Shell (Every episode/movie)
Evangelion
Trigun
Gungrave
Casshern Sins
Elfen Lied

Preferably want more grown up sci fi stuff and as few episodes as possible. No 300 episode epics please, i don't have *that* much spare time.

Thanks!
I would reccomend Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (or "When They Cry" if you're WRONG.) But I assume you watch things in English so in order to not have you DIE I won't make you sit through the anime that English Voice Acting murdered.

So how about............

.hack// Roots?

If you want something brief the entire series of Angel Beats is only 13 episodes long.

It's also quite good, the only anime I've watched that I actually like more than it is Code Geass.

Heroic Age. Aci Fi, adult themed(think gundam seed)I think it has 25 or 50 episodes. Short, sweet and to the point.

I have the first DVD, but I never got the next. It's good, I just got lazy.

I'm not into anime like I used to be so let me think...

Berserk and Desert Punk are good.

I'm entirely fine watching anime dub or sub. I've come to prefer fansub specifically because of all the extra notes and factoids that'll pop up from time to time.

That and Karaoke lyrics. Love me a sing along. :p

Deadman Wonderland. It's really "alternative". Only problem is that it's rather new, so not that many episodes yet. But it's Bloody, Brilliant and Bloody Brilliant.
