As an aside though, I've been thinking about getting Baldur's Gate 2, but do I need to play the first one to know what's going on? I tried the first one but it chewed me up and spit me out almost immediately, which I guess brings me to my next question, is BG2 friendlier to the player than the first one?
Well, it's more rewarding to play through BG1, then import your character into BG2, but it's not necessary. You can always read up on the backstory of the first game.

I'm working through Planescape Torment, right now and it's pretty good. I've only just started, but I'm liking what i've seen of it. The Fallout games are amazing of course, although I think 1 has better pacing than 2.

You don't need to, but it is a better experience if you have. But no, Baldur's Gate 2 can stand on its own if need be! As for difficulty BG2 is still a hard game but you start out much more competent at a higher level which softens the blow considerably. Baldur's Gate 2 also often feels more, well, fair. If you die it's because you weren't prepared or you did something wrong, there's rarely a scenario where the enemy is just overwhelmingly powerful.

You *will* learn to fear vampires, beholders, mind flayers and dragons in a way modern rpg don't however. Be afraid!

Personally I find half the fun of the Baldur's Gate series is progressing from a wimp in the first game and eventually becoming the absolute beast you become by the end of the second game. But that's a personal preference.

Damn, this seems like a great oppurtunity for me to pick up the original Fallouts!... pity they won't accept my debit card... anybody have any idea how long this sale is supposed to last?

OT:
Painkiller is a lot of fun if you enjoy mindless shootemups like Doom or Serious Sam, so I would definitely give that a go if you haven't already.

Heard only good things about the first two Fallout games and Planetscape: torment.
So I decided to give them a go. Will be excellent for my laptop during winterholiday =)

I remember having some great childhood times with Heroes of might and magic 2 and 3, maybe you should give one of them a go, if that is up your ally.

Just installed baldur's gate 1, I think I am up for the challenge. I think i'll play it a bit tomorrow though, I need some sleep. I will probably primarily focus on planescape:torment though for now.

Thank you all for your suggestions though, keep them coming :)

As great as the sale is, I've still got over 10 games I've bought from GOG that I haven't yet had time to play (inclduing PS:T, BG1+2, Freespace1+2). I really need to get onto that.

I'm tempted to buy Real Myst though, after playing the original version. Just to see how it looks.

I decided to show no self control whatsoever, and bought Ultima VII, Ultima Underworld 1+2, and Real Myst.

At least I only spent $9.

None of my wishlisted games are on sale FROWNEY FAAAAAAAAAAACE!!!

ot: Though most people would say Baldur's Gate 2, I really couldn't get into it. Of those, I would recommend fallout. Great setting if you can get past the somewhat awkward controls.

Baldur's gate 2
Planescape: Torment
Psychonauts
Beyond Good and Evil
Fallout
All of those are somewhere between great and amazing, but one stands above the rest:
Planescape torment. This game has one of the best stories of any game ever created. I would prioritize this game.

Apart from that, here is the order which I would priorities them:
Fallout
Beyond good & evil
Baldur's gate 2
Psychonauts

Other games to consider:
Ultima 7 (and 4-6 if you can stands the graphics)
Ultima Underworld 1-2 (some of the best dungeon crawlers ever made. They were way ahead of their time in every way when they were released!)
Lands of lore
Wing Commander
Age of wonders (1 is the best in the series)
Fallout 2
Arcanum (for its amazing setting)
Divine Divinity (overlooked gem)
Broken sword
Crusader No Remorse (and if you like it, No regret, which is quite similar to no remorse but has some more weapons and stuff)
Dungeon Keeper
Fantasy wars
Freespace 1-2
Gabriel Knight 1-3
Jagged Alliance 1-2 (some of the best turnbased tactics games ever!)
Sacrifice (very interesting mix between strategy, tactics and action. Challenging but very fun)
Outcast (one of the finest action/adventure games of all time)
Might & Magic 1-6 (bundle, lots of games for your money. Start with 3)
Arx Fatalis (Similar to ultima underworld)
Syberia 1-2 (Wonderful and beautiful, some of the best adventure games ever created)
Real Myst (see what the phenomena was all about, minus the clunky controls)
