DEFCON. Cool strategy game where you Nuke the hell out of each other (like the final scene in the movie Wargames, but a game). Also great to play at work or school. It even has an "office mode" that mutes the sound, and if you double tap Esc it instantly minimises the window to an icon in the task bar. Played in real time you can stretch a game out all day while still doing work.

The Original Starcraft then.
Can't go wrong with Starcraft. And Warcraft III.

Dawn of war is great too.
Everything that is worth saying has now been said.

Dawn of War, Warcraft 3, and Starcraft. Favourite RTS games. Maybe throw in some C&C:Red Alert too.

Starcraft is good, if SC2 had LAN it would be the RTS of choice.

Dawn of War, Company of Heroes, Age of Empires 2 (AoE3 is ok but AoE2 is the better game and also will run on ANY computer). Warcraft 3 is great too. A lot of the Command and Conquer games are good too. Just not CnC4. Don't go there.

Total Annihilation is the precursor to SupCom and is a fun little hectic game, definitely worth a few fun games.

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head, I think I covered all of the best ones.

EDIT: Hah! Ninja'd on almost everything. I should read more before I post.

Calumon: Strategy? In My Games?

Jack: It's more likely than you think, Calumon.
I see what you did there.

OT: I've found the best ones for LAN parties are the ones that incorporate drawn-out resource collection. Homeworld and Age of Empires 2 would have to be tops, in my book.

Starcraft, Warcraft III, Age of Empires II and Civ IV.
And if you have the time Hearts of Iron II. But believe me it will take hours just to get part way through a single game.

most definitely - awesome, awesome game; it's soooo intense
as AOE2, C&C (any really) and warcraft 3 (hero defence is awesome and has consumed many early hours at LANs :D) all been called I will go out on a limb and say Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds!!!

Rise of Nations.

Best LAN game of all time.

Seriously, don't touch legends with a barge pole.
