I am going to London this summer on Study Abroad Program. Anything I should know? I am told that I need to try and get into the local culture. So any suggestions about were to go or what to do is appreciated. I seriously don't care. I just don't want to go to cheesy tourists spots. That has never been my thing.

Oh...and what is the weather like over there in the summer?
Weather is chaotic. No telling what the Atlantic or the North Sea will throw at us next or even what one gets priority.

As for travel tips, assuming youre not going to the usual tourist rat-holes, where are you going?

OT: If you're American, which I assume you are, don't talk to much about how your country is politically/culturally different. Europeans often dislike Americans so it's best to come across as not being too patriotic.

In Britain its polite to pull up your trouser leg as a sign of freindly greeting!
Indeed, but only the right trouser leg. The left trouser leg is very insulting to the brits.

This is completely ridiculous.
Shows what you know about London

At the first opportunity, leave London (by train) and head to Bath (the city). It is the site of the old Roman baths, and it is one of the nicest towns I've ever had the pleasure to visit in England. Absolutely beautiful. Plus, if you like architecture, you can check out Bath Abby (beautiful). If you can spend a few days there, you will find Bath very central to a number of historical sites (if thats you're thing). If you can only make a day trip of it, see the Roman Baths - well worth it - and check out some of the local pubs.

And if you're going to be in London for the whole summer, you should probably buy a subway pass. That's the cheaper way to go if you're going to be using the subway all the time.

i just noticed you have a hitch hikers guide to the galaxy avatar so i think you will get on ok my friend :D

the English will wear shorts in summer and probably no shirts if it gets really hot but if u live in a hot climate it might still be a bit chilly some of the time so take some jeans too :D and form a fashion point of view (assuming things haven't changed since last summer) u will be wanting to go for 3/4 lengths or cargo shorts they seem to be popular.

drink heavily (18 not 21 here ;p) choose a football (sorry soccer ;p) team and you'll soon fit right in

Cottons Rhum Shop in Camden is a great place for nice booze too :D

Don't get mugged or stabbed.

Have fun.
Isn't that pretty obvious?.....

OT: Can't give any London centric advice as I've never been. Just try not to stick out any more than possible. Obviously there will be signs you're American but don't do the whole touristy thing. Blend in, be polite, don't get too political. And the usual stuff that goes along with a big city, stay in the lit areas, stay with you're friends more often than not and stuff like that. Hope you have fun

Ok i would invest in a few pairs of light trousers, no matter how hot it gets you will wear them. Nothing will get you alienated quicker here than wearing shorts. 3/4 length trousers are acceptable, 1/2 length are not. Hot pants will get you treated like a lerper.

Also unfortuately the culture points all have tourist rat-holes around them. Unless you want to go to the more modern culture points, where you stand a fairly low chance of being stabbed.

On sighting a gang, do not do anything to draw thier attention. Much like in nature, theese people tend to have interest in potential targets that actively flee.

Stay out of residential areas. Nothing will get you lost here quicker than the convoulted backsteets of a group of blocks of identical looking flats.

That said, buy a road map at the airport. You will need it.

Do not attempt to use the buses without advice from people also waiting for buses or the bus drivers.

On any transport network make sure you know where youre going. Major overground and all underground stations will always have someone there from TFL you can ask for help.

Stay in the north part of it.
EVERYTHING is over-priced as fuck!!
The underground tube system can be over-crowded but it works very well so look into the cheapest options for that if you're going out and about.

Don't be surprised at how expensive and utterly awful the food is - that's what shocked me when I went with my Dad when I was in high school.

Other than that it's a pretty fun place.

There are no public trash bins in London, or at least there aren't very many. Get used to keeping your trash in your pockets. Also, tool around for some good pubs. If you get a chance to go outside of London and find yourself in Oxford, try the Eagle and Child, it's a little more formal, but a nice place for a delicious pint.
