I didn't like Higurashi believe it or not, I found the characters to be unlikeable and the whole alternate reality thing made my brain hurt. I would express my dislike more but I'd rather not offend, lets just say I really really didn't like it.

Seeing as how most people are posting about horror, mystery, psychological stuff, I'll post a fantasy. It's called fairy tail. Think if you took a world full of mages and put it in Ireland (with the drunkards and people constantly looking for fights). Also the music (in the show, not the intro, intro sucks for some reason) is pretty epic.

If you want sci-fi psychological stuff that is not childish, check out Neon Genesis Evangelion.

After watching its legendary ending, watch End of Evangelion to see an actual ending with closure.

Then, Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
It conquered EVA as my favorite series before it even finished.

Hey guys, not sure how to start this, but here goes: I saw Death Note a few years back and absolutely loved it. I also liked Monster and Ergo Proxy. Now I'm going through another phase where I really want to watch a good anime, but I know from experience that there is much, much more bad than good where anime is concerned (my opinion, no offence intended to anyone who disagrees).

So, I'm wondering if my fellow Escapists can recommend me any good anime (I like horror, mystery, psychological kinda stuff. Oh, and fantasy, but not childish stuff)

Also, I'm aware that there are a fair few other threads on this, but looking through the ones I found I wasn't able to find anything I like.
First off, there's much more good than bad in any medium, secondly if you like horror, mystery and psychological stuff here's a few that may just be up your ally:

Serial Experiments Lain
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni
Paranoia Agent
Narutaru

And for some stuff that isn't exactly what you asked for but may still interest you:

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Eve no Jikan (both because they regularly explore themes of humanity, and "what is the human soul really?")

Elfen Lied (I love this one but many don't, either way the manga's better, though it doesn't have Lilium)

Code Geass (because the protaganist is much like Light from Death Note, though it's a pretty action heavy series involving giant robots so...)

FLCL (Because undernieth the insanity and madcap fun, there is a pretty good story exploring the concept of growing up)

Grave of the Fireflies (because it is an increadibly good attack on the concept of pride and probably the best piece of anti-war media outside of -)

Now and Then, Here and There (This, this thing got under my skin in so many ways, it left me more disturbed than any horror/psychological film I have ever seen, that is all I can say without revealing too much)

Clannad (Because it's one of my favourite series of all time and I must reccomend it regardless of the tastes of the one asking)

And finally: Tengen Toppa Guren Lagaan(because it is fucking awesome and you'll need a pick-me-up after the last three)

One last note: Akumetsu, it's a manga only but it's from the author of Death Note and has a very similar basic premise: A young man gains special powers and takes it upon himself to rid the world of evil, it's basically Death Note if the protaganist were the exact opposite in every way, it's also rather more action oriented and politically minded than Death Note so take that in to consideration.

GANTZ (even though I'm about halfway through) It has a very...interesting plot, not young kid friendly. But very real characters

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
When you first start watching it you may think it's too childish, its a quasi magic girl anime afterall... Then Episode 3 roles around and you find out the truth... of how wrong you truly were... Then you keep watching and you figure out that you weren't only wrong, that it gets worse...

I forgot one very important one too:

Dennou Coil

This is a wonderful show that more people need to see. I don't know why it's so obscure on these forums, but it is definitely worth watching if you like things that are good. Now, don't be fooled by the fact that the main characters are children. This isn't a terribly childish show or one of those "edgy" grimdark animes.

In a nutshell, it's just... really, really good. Think My Neighbor Totoro crossed with Ghost in the Shell. Does that sound insane? Well, maybe. There's some genuinely plausible science-fiction mixed with some mild fantasy elements, and a very heartwarming and engaging story at its center. Highly, highly recommended.

Baccano! : Tons of amazing characters, a great story, and it's different from pretty much every anime i've ever seen.

Claymore : Dark, brutal action/fantasy with intresting characters and a suprisingly good story. Were it not for the fact that the ending was really rushed it'd be one of my 5 favorite ever.

FLCL Random, insane, great music, and it's probably the best story about growing up i've ever seen.

Full Metal Alchemist(Brotherhood & the Original Anime) Both are really good. Everything from the characters to the story just plain works. I prefer Brotherhood, but you can't go wrong with either.

If you find something you like you might want to search for it at

. Underneath each anime's page is a list of other shows that you may enjoy.

Ep 43 airs tomorrow for Brotherhood in English.

Edit: As the poster below me has linked to the first part of the series in English, I feel the need to say that there are 64 episodes, so the full anime has not been dubbed yet.
