Hey guys, not sure how to start this, but here goes: I saw Death Note a few years back and absolutely loved it. I also liked Monster and Ergo Proxy. Now I'm going through another phase where I really want to watch a good anime, but I know from experience that there is much, much more bad than good where anime is concerned (my opinion, no offence intended to anyone who disagrees).
So, I'm wondering if my fellow Escapists can recommend me any good anime (I like horror, mystery, psychological kinda stuff. Oh, and fantasy, but not childish stuff)
Also, I'm aware that there are a fair few other threads on this, but looking through the ones I found I wasn't able to find anything I like.
First off, there's much more good than bad in any medium, secondly if you like horror, mystery and psychological stuff here's a few that may just be up your ally:
Serial Experiments Lain
Higurashi no
Naku Koro Ni
Paranoia Agent
Narutaru
And for some stuff that isn't exactly what you asked for but may still interest you:
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Eve no Jikan (both because they regularly explore themes of humanity, and "what is the human soul really?")
Elfen Lied (I love this one but many don't, either way the manga's better, though it doesn't have Lilium)
Code Geass (because the protaganist is much like Light from Death Note, though it's a pretty action heavy series involving giant robots so...)
FLCL (Because undernieth the insanity and madcap fun, there is a pretty good story exploring the concept of growing up)
Grave of the Fireflies (because it is an increadibly good attack on the concept of pride and probably the best piece of anti-war media outside of -)
Now and Then, Here and There (This, this thing got under my skin in so many ways, it left me more disturbed than any horror/psychological film I have ever seen, that is all I can say without revealing too much)
Clannad (Because it's one of my favourite series of all time and I must reccomend it regardless of the tastes of the one asking)
And finally: Tengen Toppa Guren Lagaan(because it is fucking awesome and you'll need a pick-me-up after the last three)
One last note: Akumetsu, it's a manga only but it's from the author of Death Note and has a very similar basic premise: A young man gains special powers and takes it upon himself to rid the world of evil, it's basically Death Note if the protaganist were the exact opposite in every way, it's also rather more action oriented and politically minded than Death Note so take that in to consideration.
