GOOD Female Support Characters

I know people are always complaining about horrible female support characters (Yahtzee). And since people always talk about the bad ones, I was curious if there are any good ones?

For me, I can't think of any I liked, but I also can't think of anyone I really hated. All of them I try to ignore unless I can control them (JRPG territory). The ones I do I tend to like, since they all tend to be useful in their own ways (although in JRPGs I like having many characters so I'm indifferent). Discuss.

realistically, female support characters are usually simply motivation for the main character.

Even though she is essential the thing that points you towards things of interest and explains what's going on, a role filled almost as well (but less sexily) by a pointer and a radio contact.

I think Cortana is a pretty good supporting character. Since no one else is justifying their choice I won't be (although some raving idiot will probably convince enough sane individuals to make me).

If there's Only one, then you just proved Yahtzee right. Unfortunately female support characters tend to turn lousy because of the frequency with which they just randomly fall in love with the main character, and are only there to do just that and look hot and be lousy tacked on characters with poor functionality/stats.

There are some solid Female "support" characters out there. (I have defined support character as a female character central to the story line, who is not the protagonist or an enemy character)

Atlus does the female support characters well (look at the women from Trauma Center, The Red Rose Aristocrats from Rule of Rose, Argilla from Digital Devil Saga)

The Phoenix Wright series always has strong characters including female support (as big as her boobs are, Mai is solid)

Cing's games as well (Rachel from Hotel Dusk)

Check out the longest Journey for excellent female portrayal all round.

Aeris (because the love themes were handled well)

Yorda was mentioned, but don't forget SOC's Mono (excellent job given she was dead for most of the game)

There are a lot out there. I would say Yahtzee's point still holds, because they are the clear minority, for every one I list I could probably come up with five bad female support characters, half of them being in the same games as the good female support characters.

I give you a trophy, now is there any chance that the world would be a better place if we acknowledged that Heavenly sword is not the only video game that ever existed with quality female support characters?

Princess Peach? The female agents in Jagged Alliance? Balders Gate? Candy Suxx/Mercedes? A lot of the 'grunt' characters are both sexes. Scarlet from Megalomania? Doctor Mossman? Number One in Evil Genius? Tanya in C&C? Sara Kerrigan? The Ladies in GTA:SA? Aida - Unreal 2?
