How about Tatl, the fairy from Majora's Mask? She's kind of interesting and is the best developed character from the entire Legend of Zelda series.
What? She has all the problems ofNavi, and is just a lot less helpful and bitchy at the start.
I know, but she has believable motivations and emotions unlike anyone else in the LoZ series. Alright, Tetra and Midna have those too.

Maybe I'm biased because I loved Majora's Mask so much.

(cannot remember her name for the life of me) from Prince of Persia and The Two Thrones.
Do you mean Farah or Kileena?

Also, I would like to say that I quite liked Tali. Iunno, something just made me find her interesting. I know the character is clear-cut, but still...

Rinoa Heartilly and Quistis Trepe were awesome characters, in my opinion.
One knows that throwing money at a problem does wonders, and the other one is like my sister: Beautiful, intelligent, well-educated, slightly nerdy and kicks major bum.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned her, but Anna Grimsdottir. She doesn't seem to have any sort of stupid crush on the main character, is smart and helpful, and the interplay and banter between her and Fisher is always great fun.

Also, Mona Sax from Max Payne is a great Femme Fatale, and there's really the feeling that she's off doing her own thing most of the time, rather than being attached to the main character by invisible umbilical cord.

Finally, I really liked Sophia Hapgood from Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. I liked the way she was crucial to a lot of the plot, and her random psychic stuff was always well handled.

Yuna, Final fantasy X.

Yeah, I over-powered her, so I used her.

Too bad she wasn't in any other games.
BECAUSE THERE WAS ONLY ONE FINAL FANTASY TEN, RIGHT GUYS?

Riona And Quistis got me stuck in that game. Around the beginning of disc 2, because I was a dumb twat and put all the girls in one party, and they became useless when I tried to stop the missiles...

Before I start, one of my most important criteria for a good character is that they invoke an emotion from me, most likely empathy, although humor or the like are important too.

I know it's been said, but I really found it easy to empathize with Alyx.

All of the female party members in Mass Effect, especially Tali because, even though it's fairly clear from the beginning that she isn't a love interest, she remains interesting.

All the female party members in both KotOR games, especially Kreia(her scene in the Dantooine Jedi Enclave sent shivers down my spine. "It is because you were afraid") and Juhani. Kreia because she just had so many conversations that were so cool, I still go over them in my head, especially the conversation between her and Sion at the beginning. "Your senses betray you, as you betrayed me." I dunno about Juhani, go figure, I just liked her.

Grimsdottir from the Splinter Cell games, more because she brought on funny responses from Sam (Sam-I spent the rest of that year face-down on the road from Baghdad to Kuwait. grim-well, if it's any consolation, I had a bad year that year too. sam-what, you weren't working for the government in '89... grim- no, I was in 10th grade. sam- oh. right. yuck)

Midna, although I spent most of the game hating her

btw, that scene I mentioned about Kreia on Dantooine, here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDbr63GwIVU and here's the conversation with Sion (although it was altered to give her a lightsaber, she just had a sword in the game) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDbr63GwIVU

You have to go with Liara Tosoni from Mass Effect. She incredibly useful in a fight by stirring up the enemies but lets you get the kills. She has good biotic shielding so she doesn't need to be rescued too often. And the cherry on top, she swings both ways and has a sweet ass. Tali dies too much. Ashley is annoying and isn't bi-directional.

Alyx Vance and GLaDoS for sure.
And Cortana from Halo: Combat evolved. In Halo 2 and 3 she just got kind of annoying.

The thing about Midna is that her motivation is very believable, even pragmatic. She's a royal who wants her kingdom back in her hands. Tatl... well, maybe I didn't get far enough.

How about Tali from Mass Effect? The happy, mysterious medium between Liara and Ashley, and she's not an option!

I'm going to repeat Alyx, but give some reasons why I think she is a great female support character.

Simple version: She does her job.

What is the job of a support character? Plot exposition, extra firepower, opening gates, and adding color to the scene with dialogue, all without upstaging the player.

Alyx does this job admirably. Plot exposition? Yup. She knows more about the setting than you do, having grown up in it. And she's the one who talks to other supporting characters.

Extra firepower? Her infinite-ammo machine pistol was custom-made for player support - it is always there when needed, but it's not a superweapon.

Opening gates? She does that well - she can disarm forcefields and open locked doors.

Adding color with dialogue? Sure. The episodes would be much more boring without Alyx.

And on top of that, she's attractive as a person. I think Valve realized that their core audience is made up of male nerds. And what do male nerds find most attractive? Female nerds. So they gave her a brain and tech skills.

OK, just gonna rattle off a few names - no use explaining if you don't know about them anyway:)
Jaheira, Viconia, Annah, Fall-From-Grace, Farah, Elena Fisher, Triss Merigold, Kai. Those are all well-written and contribute greatly to the gaming experience. There are several more of course, but these are the ones I can think of straight away.
