Yeah, but Midna is intitially a royal *****.

Do any of you even know who Kai is?
You're either talking about Dragonball Z or the chick from Heavenly Sword.
Whats Dragonball Z?
I would hate to ruin the surprise for when someone forces you to find out. Don't let anyone fool you, after the first Season the rest of it is garbage. The fight from that season is the best in the whole series and nothing else comes close.

There are plenty of great female support characters out there, you just have to be willing to look.

Also, don't assume that hot video game chicks must necessarily be terrible characters.

Oh no, I will assume that.

I think Cortana is a pretty good supporting character. Since no one else is justifying their choice I won't be (although some raving idiot will probably convince enough sane individuals to make me).
Before or after she keeps annoying you by taking over the entire screen?
Both and during ;)
I will say this, she looks damn good in her electro-bikini.

Tennenbaum from BioShock (not many video game characters evoke genuine sympathy from me, but she pulled it off), Ashley and Liara from Mass Effect, and Ruby from Dark Cloud (not much to offer plot-wise but she's effective in combat). I didn't see many current-gen characters so I figured to balance the timeline a bit.

While they aren't support characters (they're leads), I want to give a shout-out to Samus and Maia from Summoner: A Goddess Reborn (a game I logged an indecent number of hours on). Though Samus doesn't really have much plot around her, both are very strong characters that endeared themselves far more effectively to me than a lot of men.

God I hate to do this to anyone, but you're just asking for it.

I kind of liked Sheena in Tales of Symphonia. I found her nicely flawed and powerful all at once. Overcoming her demons to become Totally Awesome was good. And unless you were deliberately trying to set her up with Lloyd, no Obligatory Love Interest bullshit. Well, Zelos had a thing for her, but it was never serious between them.

I also think Midna was KICK. ASS. She was the reason to play that game.

I'm sorry but there's not even a competition when you bring Alyx Vance into the picture. She's "Tha Best" end of story.

But closely followed i think I'm gonna have to say is Xana from Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, that was like the best female support characters EVER (except for Alyx ofc)

This will probably get me ALOT of hate but still,
I liked all the female support characters in Mass Effect and actually felt there was NOT ENOUGH dialogue there (bring on the hate baby! ^^)
I would easily have wanted atleast 3-4 times as much personal dialogue(the conversations on the Normandy between each Main Story mision) in Mass Effect and maybe even a bit more still...
What? It help immersion!

And then there's alot of interesting support characters in Baldur's Gate II which i really liked. Just pick some female characters out of there, there's plenty of them. ^^

EDIT:

Oh and Cortana ofcourse. Like some people here already mentioned.
