Why has no one mentioned GLaDos yet? Sure she's not organic and she tried to kill you. But she is still female.

Having played Half-Life 2 recently, what the heck makes Alyx so goddamn special besides being in a great game? Seriously, I fail to see it. She doesn't do anything especially amazing or out of the ordinary for a supporting character. She's good, sure, but not the hands down best be all end all female support. Now if that priest in Ravenholm was a babe, we'd be cooking with gas!

My personal pick for a supporting female character would probably have to be Tifa Lockhart in (who doesn't know this?) Final Fantasy VII, pretty much because she's one of the only female characters that has a deep connection to the main plot and that fights up front with the boys- hand to hand no less. Obligatory boob comment here.

Cortana is annoying, and Alyx is cannon fodder (Even if she is hot...).

Silk Fox (Jade Empire) for me. She just seemed like if there was trouble, she was actually useful.

She is a machine, okay a genetic/organic-tech-machine-ish thingy, sort of.
But still i doubt she's actually female, she might have a feminine tone of voice but i really doubt she's female, being a machine(-ish) and all...

Yea, I liked Kreia. On a second thought, I liked all female support characters in both the KotOR games.
^this. I loved those games and (almost) all the characters in them.
I agree, except for Juhani. Just didn't like her.

Well we all probably have some character we didn't like.

Alyx Vance.

The REAL end of discussion.
Alyx is ugly.
I find your sense of taste... well, I though Alyx looked quite nice. I suppose we have different taste in women (pixelated women that is).

I've gotta join the Alyx-bashing waggon here, at the begining of episode 1 she is given infinate ammo and will only fire where you illuminate (some may say that makes her quite valuble but thats what I'm getting at), this made me think, and was further proved by listening to the dev commentaries, that they threw this feature in to get use out of her and to somehow make you attach to her (it just struck me as a bad excuse to leave you with nothing but the shoddy grav gun for the first section of the game). Throughout she is often involved in what Valve call 'gates' (pre-programmed barriers to keep the player from moving on until they've sat through that almightily important 5 minute dialogue) in Half Life 2 particularly I often connected her appearance with yet another unessercary pause in the already broken up action.

Now, I would say that a pretty good female support character would have to be Isabella from Dead Rising, okay, so she is initially hostile (name me a heroine from Devil May Cry who isn't) but:
1. In-game she can actually hold her own against zombies and her AI is refreshingly smarter than other survivors for some reason.
2. In terms of the plot she is more or less central, she even creates a zombie cure for you (sorry for the spoilers guys, not that there was much to spoil) so her importance is in fact more than just being a crowbarred in love interest who has terrible things happen to her.
