Elena Fisher. Whilst she eventually displays an irritating tendency to get herself kidnapped, she doesn't commit any of the cardinal support character sins, like deciding that the best place to stand is directly in my line of fire.

Annah from Planescape: Torment comes to mind. Yeah, she had mega-tits. Everyone in the game did. So did the zombies. That game in general had very well-fleshed-out supporting women. Who didn't hear the word 'brothel' and expect something entirely different from what we got? Who wasn't affected by Deionarra's mournful, obsessive loneliness or Ravel's psychopathic crush on you?

Honorable mentions go to Rose from The Legend of Dragoon (who outshone practically every other character in the game), Deis/Ershin from Breath of Fire 4, Amaterasu from Okami (who licks her own butt like a lady, I tells ya), Beatrix and Freya from FFIX (Beatrix especially - when I first played the game as a child I wanted to BE HER), Kreia and Visas from KOTOR2 and the inimitable GLADOS. The reason this list consists mostly of RPGs is because I am a loser.

Liara, tali and ashly from mass effect...
We lost another one to shiny graphics and shallow characters.. :(
I don't see why a good support character has to be like the most intriguing character EVAR?

Most of the characters mentioned here is probably more interesting than most people irl, which makes it less believable of sorts.
A character can be likable although they're not tremendously interesting, but just because the seem like a believable character and is just interesting enough.
It makes them feel somewhat close to reality.

Teresa, Syphon Filter. Anyone remember her? OR Bohammer, Halo 1. The pelican dropship pilot.

I never can see why people like stuck up Jedi tart Bastila. One of the worst cases of Informed Ability ever, but so completely up herself about her own capabilities. Seriously, the only saving grace to her presence in the game is a high Dex score.

Do you mean Viktoria from the Thief series? If so I agree, she's quite an entertaining enemy then friend. Going the other way, Shodan from System Shock (enemy/friend-ish/enemy).

That said, you don't really play along side them as you do with Alyx, so perhaps that's grounds for disqualification?

Gift.

Nico from Broken Sword. I dunno why. She's not a damsel in distress in Sleeping Dragon at least, and... well I guess the french accent rounds it off

Alyx (I think that's how it's spelt) Vance from Half life 2. she actually seems to have emotions (the number of times she gasps 'Oh my god' notwithstanding), isn't armed with a bandolier of huge dangerous guns anddoesn't spend all her time dissapearing into the background while the player wipes out all the enemies on ther own ( well, not in the episodes)

EDIT: does GlaDos even count s a female support character? it's a giant computer that tries to kill you, and one of the bits you have to knock off it in the final battle talks in a male voice (telling abot cake) I cold be wrong about this.

isn't it Foehammer? What about Cortana, or the pilot of the pelican in halo 3, Hocus?
