If I HAD to nitpick, I would say Kingdom Hearts 2, for this reason; I went through 40+ hours of boss battles, cutscenes, and battles, and Sora and Kairi didn't kiss ONCE?!?!?!? Jeez, it's obvious they love each other, let's see them show it!
Also, the Secret ending of Aquaria was a bit of a let down.
no spoliers but after all the effort of, oh i dunno, FIGHTING HELL, that certain female romantic interests would be more happy but whatever and the lame 'to be continued'? :/
Well, honestly, the books follow the same pattern as I would guess the games will.
Dante's Inferno, having the most interesting content, was the most enjoyable book and will probably be the most enjoyable of the inevitable series they're making out of the games.
The books Purgatorio and Paradiso, while not bad, were pretty boring compared to Inferno. I mean, after you've seen all the cool stuff in Hell, all the dredgery of Purgatory and the fluffy sunshiny clouds of Paradise are a let down.
Now, compare that to the video game series. Unless they have Hell break loose into Purgatory and Paradise, which would be just way too contrived for me (but I think that's what they'll do), what are you going to fight in Purgatory and Paradise? The Penitent? Angels? God? I mean, there's very, very little to choose from enemies-wise.
Their best bet would be to make Purgatory and Paradise very creative and visually-stunning puzzle games.
Edit: I should note that I didn't find the final level of Inferno to be a real disappointment. My only issue is with the epilogue.
Halo 2, Halo 3, Assassin's Creed 2 (just stupid...), Mass Effect 2 (even when you save everyone), Metal Gear Solid 2 (far too convoluted, and pales in comparison to the amazing ending on MGS3).
To be honest, most great games can have the shittiest of endings, but luckily it doesn't necessarily sour the game.
I mean, I loved the game.
Seriously, I played it 'till the disc broke, and then it turns out Jade was not who she thinks she was.
Alrighty, can roll with that.
But then they pulled that shit Pey'J being infected and all.
Mindfuckery of a kid's mind ensued.
I have to admit that one of my favorite games ever - Final Fantasy 7 - didn't really have a satisfying ending. As soon as you defeat Sephiroth, the game cuts to 500 years later showing the planet in peace, and you're left with all these questions like - Did Cloud and Tifa do it? What kind of jobs did they get after saving the world?? etc..
Fortunately I think the developers realized this and that's why they made the movie "FF Advent Children," to answer these questions. Good game, but I wish it explained more in the end.
While I consider this to be as closest to the gaming equivalent of Jesus as a game can be, the ending left me and millions of other gamers hungry for some fucking closure.
KOTOR 2 was so rushed that they couldn't make a good ending in time before it had to be released. Borderlands was kinda depressing. Fable 2 had a poor ending. Arkham Asylum's biggest problems were bosses, including Joker.
Oh when I played that... even on my first playthrough I could tell "I'm fucked aren't I?" and I knew I just had to stay alive till I die at the "right point"... well you don't really die but you know.
From what I hear that is the problem with MW2... it abuses this "die at the right point" far too much.
Jak 3, because that twist about Jak at the end requires like 3 time paradoxes and the game didn't go into it at all. And while I love TWEWY, the first time I beat the game I couldn't enjoy the ending because I was too busy trying to figure out what the hell had just happened. the times after that it was fine, however.
Seriously, it 'ends' at a mid point of the story with some rushed conclusions mashed in.
Felt very much like a case of "we need to wrap this up now in two scenes - before the developer shuts down".
oh, and half life 2, episode 2, it wasnt a bad ending, but they havent made the end of the series (srry for spelling)its leaving us to die befor the last one/s come out.
