Sid Meier's Pirates!! One of the most addicting games I've ever played.

Starcraft, obviously.

Age of empires II: Age of Kings.

Empire Earth.

Just anything off of GOG.com, and they cost 10 bucks at most

One I can recommend if your PC can run it, my old lap top could so it might not be a major problem to run

Hidden & Dangerous 2, lovely little SAS FPS/third person shooter with tactics thrown in aswell

Starcraft and Age of Mythology are classic.
Also, I like to recommend Zoo Tycoon for all your animal vs animal needs.

Oh yes.

Loved that game, and it does run on even the shittiest of PCs.

Crysis, maybe...you know, if you...turn it down to Low...

Nah, in all seriousness; look at indie games, there are often some really good ones that don't take a lot out of your system, like And Yet it Moves and Braid.

No mention of Half Life yet?

All the Valve games that run on the GoldSource (read: Quake) Engine, Half Life, OpFor, Blue Shift, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress Classic and of course Counter Strike, plus about a bajillion mods.

Also Unreal Tournament and Quake 3, try Battlefield 1942 as well, those and CS still have huge numbers of players online.

If you can find a copy, I used to love A.B.O.M.I.N.A.T.I.O.N. : The Nemesis Project. It's officially old as the hills, but it's a really good isometric turn-based strategy game. Plus, it has alien zombie cultist cyborgs. It's a combination which actually beats ninja pirates.

Torchlight just came out. It's a new game, but the requirements are low. As in windows 2000 low. Giantbomb has a quick look up if you want to see what it looks like.
