Good games with terrible plots.

I'll say it first then: Borderlands. The game is much more enjoyable when you forget about the story and concentrate on the myriad of loot.
I second Borderlands. I kept saying to my screen as NPC's were talking "Yeah, yeah. Shut up, shut up, shut up." Unskippable yet replayable cutscenes. NOOOOOOO! Fun game though! Especially multiplayer.

Mirror's Edge. The game actually works better if you pretend there isn't a story line. To think it was written by Phillip Pullman's daughter.
If Mirror's Edge had simply been a game in which you have to transport a package from the beginning of the level to the end (whilst having to evade cops on the way) it would have been a much better game. I didn't need some bullshit story about police states, wrongful accusation and political intrigue.

Every platformer except portal and a few on Newgrounds, from Mario to (Pre-3D) Sonic, barely have plots.

Painkiller, Doom, Serios Sam, and other kill everything FPS's have hurrendous plots.

Finally, Kingdom Hearts has a plot so twisted and that makes no sense that I couldn't even figure out what the %@#$ was happening until after I finished the second game.

Like Casual Shinji said, Resident Evil 4. Also, almost every old-fashioned/classic FPS game. Doom, Quake, Serious Sam, etc.

Flipping fantastic game, but the plot was TERRIBLE.
not even! re4s plot made sense to me, was funny at parts (omg jokes that are actually FUNNY!? *universe implodes*) and towards the got really epic.

that is, unless there is some series called "resi"
You...you thought the jokes in Resident Evil 4 were funny...?
better than most games on the ps2.

HOW DO YOU NOT LAUGH AT "your right hand comes off?"!?!??!?!?!?!!?

Just Cause 2's story sounds better than Just Cause' story. Oh dear... But from your description, Hubilub, it sounds like the game is exactly the same as Just Cause...
There are tons of dumb things about Just Cause 2, but the biggest issue I have with the story is the bad guy's evil "masterplan"

"I am president over a country with a lot of oil, therefore I will send one and only one nuclear bomb each to America, China, Japan and Russia and take over the world"

Seriously, that's his evil plan to take over the world. He's going to send one nuclear bomb towards America, one to China, one to Japan, and one to Russia.

And then at the end, the good guy rigs one of the nuclear bombs to bomb the island they are on so that the oil is destroyed, resulting in none of the waring nations having any interest in it anymore. But does the super-lethal nuclear bomb that was supposed to destroy USA kill our protagonist? No, because the bomb wasn't even strong enough to destroy the island you're on. Hell, there isn't even an aftermath, there's just a cutscene of the bomb exploding in the distance, some guy saying that it blew up all the oil, and then it's over

Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl.

Awesome game, just seems like most of the story is presented through a massive wall of text, thing is, even when characters are talking it throws up that HUGE wall of text, it just puts me off so much that I almost yell "TL;DR!" and just hit "accept mission" and get on with the shooty-looty-fruity fun.

I probably should pay more attention to it though.

lost odyssey, fun rpg, HORRIBLE plot, GoW 3 plot sucked in my opinion, but the gameplay was fun, and Black sigil sucked in everything except its story

I admit that the plot itself was very enjoyable in it's own comfortable campy way, but the main baddie's grand evil plan to take over the world was the stupidest plot device I'd ever heard of.

I guess I'll change my answer to DMC. The first game that made me think, "Christ, this story sucks!"

That actually sounds so bad that it's funny. Actually, what you described is also like Just Cause 1.. That was the reason for going in. Weapons of Mass Destruction.

most "Look at me im CoD4+Halo!" (Im looking at you MW2 and Halo3:ODST) had awful stories. they always try to mix drama, intruige and gritty spacemarine/aliens into one insipid package.
i just cant wait till Halo and its "regenerating health", "one button melee" buddy's get forgotten and we can get our gooey green health tubes of healthyness back.

You know want? Never, EVER put DISCUSS like you just did. We're here to discuss amongst gamers yes, but speaking like that makes you behave as though you're giving an order.
Anyways the story in Serious Sam isn't 'bad' per se, but it's barely there at all. It's just an excuse for the action.
Actually, "discuss" is a fairly common way of ending a post.

So don't be suck a stuck up.

THAT i can agree with.

great atmosphere for a hack and slash though

i remember the swimming parts that were in first person? remember those scissor ghosts?
i had one sneak up on me underwater
made me scream FUCK at the top of my lungs, seeing those scissors poke out from behind, preparing chop my head...

i mean really the game was awesome.

but THE worst plot in gaming history IMO

At the risk of having every PC gamer and their dog trying to break my door down: Half Life 2.

An absolute joy to play, nice to look at, amazing game engine, but the plot is just batshit bonkers with a side order of "Huh?"

Where did the Combine soldiers come from and why were the enemies from the first game suddenly your allies? Every time I play it I feel I have managed to bypass an entire section of the game somehow.

And the Episodes just seem to be confusing my poor aged brain even more.

Ok, you might want to explain exactly why - sure there were some plot holes, but the overall storyline and characterization were top notch.

I would have to repeat previous suggestions of the Kingdom Hearts series, and add Sacred 2. A fantastic hack-and-slash, but the story is presented in such a boring manner, and just seems to meander meaninglessly around - it's simply there to make you travel to all the different areas on the massive game map...

Freelancer. I loved that game, but once it started talking about ancient cults, and psychic aliens, that unimmersed me like getting hit in the face with a sledgehammer. (Thank god for the awesome Star Wars mod.)
