I really liked The Last Remnant. For me the first JRPG in years worth playing -- asides from the cringe-worthy "acting". Whoever convinced Johnny Yong Bosch (the Green Power Ranger) he could act was evidently playing a cruel joke.

The new Pokemon games are pretty good (albeit needlessly complex)
Hey, I like that needless complexity. I actually recently went through the trouble of starting my own eevee eugenics program so that I could get optimum IVs for my own eevee evolution team. I even went through the trouble of EV training all six. Yes, I know there's seven evolutions. I let my umbreon rot in my PC box.

Edit: Oh right. Game suggestions. I liked Stella Deus for gameplay and art, but be warned: the v/o work is pretty terrible. Fatlus has a monopoly on the JRPG market. Prove me wrong.

Edit: Oh, and if you're going to play SMT games, I'd say stay away from SMT Online: Imagine. Interesting concept, poor execution. It's fun for a few hours, but it gets old pretty quickly. If you want an MMO with a similar combat system that's been polished a bit better, you could check out Mabinogi. It's Korean-made, though, so I guess I'm drifting a little too far from the original requested genre...

I'll reiterate Persona 3/4, get the FES version of 3 if you can it has some more content, such as more personas and a 30+ hour epilogue titled the Answer. Make sure you do P3 first because It can be hard to go from P4 to P3 due to some mechanics that were improved in P4

-Wild Arms 3, interesting characters with good development, a nice story, creative puzzles and a good bit of customization. All with a spaghetti western feel. It's predecessors are worth picking up and can be downloaded of the PSN if you have that. Wild Arms 1 is more traditional in it's mechanics but WA2 throws in some interesting concepts like finding and reveling locations and treasure on the map and being able to skip most random encounters.Wild Arms 3 polishes what 2 did and then some. Also avoid Wild arms 4, it's terrible, the battle systems ok but the characters and story are annoying and un interesting.

If your looking for Some strategy JRPGs, then you really can't go wrong with any of the Fire Emblems for a more sword and magic thing style or Devil Survivor, a very dark and foreboding game set in locked down Tokyo with good characters and a demon fusing system that is pretty easy and addictive.

This thread has JRPG in its title. Few trolls for each page is pretty much guaranteed.
On site site you're just as likely to find that bullshit in any thread.

My favourite JRPG of recent times would be FF12, I liked the summons and the story is cool. And I'd suggest you get Final Fantasy 13 on March 9, because I'm certainly chomping at the bit to get it.

The last good Japanese RPG I played was Demon's Souls.

But I don't think you can consider that a traditional JRPG.

I guess an RPG can mean anything these days. *looking at Mass Effect 2*

But in lamens terms, it's a dungeon crawler where you choose how to upgrade your stats, weapons and armor.

Shadow Hearts Series ( Play it NAO!)
The Disgea Series ( Its fucking hard, and insane at the smae time)
Dragon Quest Series ( The plots are lackluster, but the sheer fact that the game is taunting you just makes you want to complete it)

The SHin Megami Tensei ( This includes the Persona Series, the Devil Summoner Series,Devil Survivor, and Nocturne. Think a FUCKED UP Religion-infused version of Digimon...without the kiddy stuff)

Skies of Arcadia :D

Best JRPG I've ever played, a shame it's only for the Dreamcast and Gamecube

Im going to assume that everyone here is a JRPG fan...i absolutely dislike them now. And for shame that none of you named any of the Dragon Quest games.

Dragon Quest VIII

EDIT: Ok there was one mention.
Considering the general attitude/flames I've seen over them, I'd consider that an odd assumption. From the demo I played, however, I agree with your recommendation.

On topic, Tales of Symphonia, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Fire Emblem (or do SRPG's not count?), Valkyria Chronicles (same concern as with FE), and Skies of Arcadia are good examples of the genre, though you should note that FFVI gets...wonky after a certain point.

The Tales series
LEGEND OF THE DRAGOON! (only obscure because FFVII came out too soon. a word of warning though: like most games released around that timeframe, the voice acting isn't superb and there are some hilarious spelling errors)
I've heard Parasite Eve is really good too.
Shin Megami Tensei ones are always good (God is always a jerk, and more so than other JRPGs so if you have belief problems with that you may want to avoid it)
Xenosaga (let it grow on you and you'll really enjoy it.)

It's nice to see that I'm not alone in liking JRPGs.

Dragon quest 8 was quite good but only if you're patient, there is quite a bit of grinding in that game
This is a little OT, but are they any good jrpgs where you don't have to grind? I ususally straight to the end of the game to finish the story only to find that I need to gain an extra 10-20 levels just to beat the last boss. It really takes away from the flow of the storyline :(
:(

Zelda (if you could consider it an rpg) is the only one I can think of

My copy of Alunrda for the PS1 gets a dust clearing every month or so. People never seem to have heard or play it so I must have been the only Final Fantasy-less kid at school.

The Tales of Series is good, my Tales of Vesperia files is about 96 hours.

Disgaea is a good tactical RPG too, thats 98 hours for me.

Also Persona 4 is amazing.
