I'd say System Shock 2, but to be honest, I don't think the majority of the latest generation of gamers are deserving.

It just makes me think that some idiot could install the game, play it for 30 minutes and decide to uninstall it because "OMg GraPhiX lock leik shitt lol dis gmae sUx, Halo pwns all!"

And such a person just isn't worthy of experiencing the masterpiece that is SS2, let alone worthy of their own organs.
The majority won't even be able to play it, because of compatibility hoodoo it requires. Think of it as entry test.

anc[is]:D Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. $20, Steam, everyone reading this buy it now, patch 7.3
Suggesting this one too. It's essentially Fallout in World of Darkness, made by ex-Black Isle guys. It was overlooked because of all the bugs, but now the community patches easily make it playable.

Psychonauts. Probably the most cleverly-written videogame ever made. Oh, and the gameplay is alright too. I suppose.

Though Erik Wolpaw, co-writer of Psychonauts, went on to head the writing staff of Portal, so even if you didn't play it, we all reaped the bounties anyway.

I had a really old game on the first computer my family bought. It was called G-nome, and came with it. It's a game about four factions of people in an open war using giant mechs. It. Was. Awesome.

Favourite game of the early nineties was a bizarre game from Psygnosis called Lemmings Paintball. It can be found free as abandon-ware these days. Don't play it expecting anything like Lemmings though, it's a completely different game with a very different premise.

Heres a really old one: Chips Challenge. My favorite PC game as a kid. There's a few different versions flying around but the one i had was on Windows 95
Oh yeah, that was a great game.

I'd also recommned Exile3 (and anything else by Spiderweb that you can find) and XDAS (made by some sarcy brit that reviews games).

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. It is the best 2D platformer ever!

But if you play its DS sequel, Yoshi's Island DS, you will cry tears of fire and discount cheese. Such a disgrace.

Also, there's this adventure game called The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It's pretty cool.

I recently played through Xcom again, still great. I recommend it if you haven't played it yet.

That is, if by "older" you mean "ancient".

This little game called Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare. Its pretty ancient and obscure, you probably never heard of it.....

On a serious note, ill just do the obvious and say Half Life (although I still havent played 1 myself)

Off the top of my head:

NES - Dragon Warrior, Wizards & Warriors

SNES - Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros III, Off Road, Star Fox

Sega Genesis - Commander Chaos

More obscure games: Myst, The 7th Guest, Phantasmagoria, Betrayal at Krondor, The Dark Eye, Sanitarium. Old PC games, I got them working on XP pretty well, but if you have Vista or 7 they may have quite a few problems.

None.
A gamer should know the classics of his or her prefered genre and that's it.

I'd reckon fans of RPGs and adventure games have the most reason to pick up really old games. The first because of all the dumbing down over the past decade and the latter because adventures tend to be short (and few nowadays) anyway.

Anyone who enjoys tactical shooters like SWAT 4, Red Orchestra, Insurgency or the older Rainbow Six games should try Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (2001).

It's part tactical FPS, part real-time tactics, part helicopter and tank simulator all rolled into one, in a huge open world, with a long and varied story-driven campaign in which the actions of four characters interweave continuously and a surprising amount of freedom to how you approach objectives.

Frankly I think it's a technical and gameplay masterpiece, and one of the best first person shooters ever made.

One of the best games ever made. Everyone should have a copy of this.

I'm going to throw in Stronghold, it's a fun combination of castle sim and rts that says 'no you're not going to spam'
It also has one of the easiest and most effective map editors out there.
