An older Final Fantasy would be a great choice, (6, 7 or 9 are the best options).

Also, if you are really looking for something entirely unique, strategic and fun, pick up Valkyria Chronicles.

EDIT: Woops, just saw you're on pc. Too bad.
Well... There's Final Fantasy 7 on PC, the port sucks, but it's not unplayable.

Captcha: Which one is the hottest?
Tifa I guess, shake those square boobs...
Pfft they werent that square apart from the Field model one which of course all looked like ass even when the game first came out heres some pics

anyway OT: I would go with FFVII if you have never played it. It has recently been re-released on PC so it should be easy to set up and play on modern systems but yeah its fairly old now.

I suppose there is Dragon age origins on PC thats the last party based RPG I played and got some enjoyment out of on PC anyway.

I'd also say The Walking Dead is an RPG. True, it doesn't have stats or inventory management, but the decisions you make DO impact the people and environment around you in a variety of ways. It's also party based, though you don't get to pick and choose your party much.
The weird thing about the term "RPG" is that in videogames, it came to mean something other than what the acronym actually stands for. TWD is a game involving roleplaying, but isn't an RPG in the videogame sense.
Yeah, weird, isn't it? :/

A party-based RPG? Why, look no further than Dokapon Kingdom!

Trolololololol

Probably not what you were thinking of, but still a fucking incredible game.

Darn... oh well, there's always PS2/Wii emulators if you want to go that route.

Yeah i'm going to go for Persona 4. It has an amazing story, great characters with an actual good turn based strategy combat system with NO random battles! Seriously, the strategy really shows itself in the boss battles especially. There are always moments where you KNOW you can win if you just don't fuck up these few turns, then Chie gets blasted by a fire attack and oh FUCK. ENTIRE PARTY SCREWED.

Oh PC only? Well PS2 emulators are a thing. Try to actually buy a PS2 copy off Amazon for like £11 to support the devs though. Or get the re-release if you have a Vita.

I thought I was starting to burn out on RPGs, but then I realised that all the ones I have been playing recently are solo based ones. I remember the days where I enjoyed games like Baldur's Gate 2 or Icewind Dale and later Dragon Age Origins, where there was some strategy involved with each encounter.

I'm willing to give these a chance before I burn out on the genre entirely. Can anyone recommend some recent party based RPGs?

I should also mention that these have to be for PC.
Arcanum

Fallout 1 & 2, Tactics

Anachronox

Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2

Planescape Torment

Septerra Core

Gorky 17

Vampire The Masquerade - Redemption

Spellforce 1 & 2

Realms of Arcania 1 - 3

Drakensang: The Dark Eye

Drakensang: River of Time

Star Wolves 1 - 3 (2 and 3 are better than 1 though)

Dungeon Siege 1 - 3

Cthulhu Saves The World

Jade Empire

Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2

A Farewell to Dragons

Especially Arcanum & Anachronox have a great repubtation but didn't sell very good regrettably.
They are all not that new though. The most recent ones would be the Drakensang games, Star Wolves 3 and Dungeon Siege 3, I think.

Legend of Grimrock (2012) is what you're looking for if strategic and tactical party-based gameplay are your priorities. Interesting mechanics, elegantly minimalistic presentation.

Otherwise, what about Drakensang: The Dark Eye (2008) and Drakensang: The River of Time (2010)? They're party-based and stat-heavy by today's standards, and you can get both games "The Complete Saga" on Amazon for $10. They're not AAA, but they have good production values for being small-budget games, and the discs have no drm or install limits, so the games are yours when you buy them.

Persona 3 and Persona 4 are good bet
Also, try Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, altough, there are lot of bullshit in this game that gets in a way of awesome battle system
Jade Empire is quite good
And you should definitely try Front Mission 3 and 4

Emulators? Ehh...

I've been enjoying a party-based RPG myself lately. Riviera: The Promised Land.

There's this grim angel named "Ein" who's battling demons and he gets beaten down at some point and separated from his partner and familiar. After he regains consciousness, he's got amnesia and finds himself lying in a bed at some house. It's there that he meets a couple girls... and another... and another... and another... (sort of). Maybe a few more... Yeah, it's almost like a harem. Almost. Not quite. A lot of people have pointed out that it has some light "dating sim" elements. By this, I mean that you will be given many opportunities to say something that will either please or upset your party members. (Or it just won't matter to them.) But it's not that simple. There will be times where you will end up disappointing someone no matter which choice you make.
