Good Trilogies?

It seems to me that there aren't many good trilogies in any medium or genre. The three I can think of off the top of my head are The Godfather (the movies, haven't read the books), Star Wars (the movies) and Lord of the Rings (both books and movies). It seems like there is a list of much longer movies/vidoegames and even book trilogies that start strong and then have a disappointing finish (The Matrix, Halo, Pirates of the Carribean, Spiderman just to name a few). Thoughts on why this or examples for/against?

WELCOME. TO. THE. ESCAPIST.

Stay out of the basement, and enjoy your stay.

Hmm...not sure I understand the question properly>_<;;.
But I shall push on regardless: I think the preassure gets to the writers, and at the end of the day, a good series with a bad ending shows that the trilogy was good...if that makes sense o.o.

Also, Spiderman, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix and Lord of the Rings have a new film coming out soon:].

Three Colours Trilogy (although White is quite weak).

Pusher Trilogy, my favourite film trilogy.

Toy Story trilogy.

Can't say much for films and games that hasn't already been said here, but books? The Night Watch trilogy is pretty damn good from start to finish, and as for not so well known ones: the Age of Misrule (Mark Chadbourn, seems to come up every time I mention books. Raving fangirl much?) trilogy is underrated gold, the Dragonmaster trilogy by Chris Bunch doesn't have a weak link in sight... I could go on.

I'd quite like to see what others come up with for films and games.

The Godfather is one big book and is similar to the first movie, but not too much. The other two films Mario Puzo had a hand in writing them directly instead of actually making more books.

The problem with trilogies is that it starts off as one good film and then (usually) looses its appeal as it ages with the other films. Only series that continuously redefine themselves end up being good because nothing becomes standard practice and fans can walk away and then return later when it fits what they want of the series.

I think I just got ninja'd in almost every other post thus far. Well done escapists.

While I don't have any existing trilogies to add, there are quite a few good series that will be seeing their third and final installment soon:
Mass Effect
Uncharted
Assassin's Creed
Christopher Nolan's Batman movies

So ask me this question again in a couple years.

EDIT: Wait! I do have something to contribute: the Metroid Prime trilogy. While Corruption is a weaker entry, the first two are fantastic games and overall the three together make for an epic series.

Back to the Future Trilogy is awesome, and in the Metroid Prime Trilogy every game is better than the last.

Something I've noticed with a lot of PS2 gen trilogies is that the 1st game's groundbreaking or great, the 2nd tries to go in a different direction but then fails as a sequel, but the 3rd game is better than the 2nd because it returns to it's gameplay or character roots. This is true of Prince of Persia, Onimusha, Devil May Cry, Grand Theft Auto, and even Metal Gear Solid.

And btw Gears of War and Mass Effect don't count as trilogies yet!

Dollars Trilogy is wicked.
The Toy Story movies were well done.

The Antony Hopkins Hannibal Lector movies make for a nice trilogy (if not designed as one per sé).

Thats all I can think of for now :)

Ace Combat for the Playstation 2.
Which comes out to "4, 5, Zero" out of a series that's soon to be up to 10.
(1: Crud, 2: Crud: 3: Cool, but in Japanese and highly outdated. 4: Trendsetter for every Simulation/Arcade Combat flight game since 2001. 5. Equally awesome. Zero: Also very awesome. 6: Xbox 360 exclusive, pretty cool. +3 PSP games, 7: In development)

Ace Combat Zero is my favorite.
