my best suggestion for sleeping well is to have a fan blowing on you. it works for me anyway. it keeps you cool so being under a donna feels really good and it blocks out noises like cars and tv in the other room and birds etc.

Make fifteen-or-so threads in one hour *points to OP*

But really, just watch something on the History Channel when it's dark.

If I really can't get to sleep then I listen to some relaxing songs on my mp3 player rather quietly. Songs like Sound Check (Gravity) by Gorillaz, Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix and Blue Powder by Steve Vai are amazing at doing this.

Ambien, reading, full stomach, maalox, xanax, exhaustion. Some combination of those usually put my insomnia to bed.

If you can't sleep get up and do something. I have to do this sometimes. Basically the way it works is that if you stay in bed and you cant sleep then your mind begins to subconsciously associate bed with not sleeping. So if you get up and do something then you brake that link. Don't go back to bed until you are about to drop.

Interuniversal telenarcosis.

In all seriousness though, try not to do a lot of really active things before sleeping, try to settle down with a book and quietly read for a bit, drink some teas or warm milk. Most of getting to sleep is having a regular schedule, so If he's having a lot of irregular hours that could be contributing.

Eat right
Exercise
Have a steady day rhythm
Work up rituals (brushing teeth, reading a book, etc.)
Don't do anything else in bed than sleep and have sex
No heavy eating/caffeine before bed
Set up everything you efficiently can, to be ready for the morning (clothes, loaded coffee machine, etc.)

That solves it.
This is the correct answer. Also try to go to bed at around the same time every night. The human body clock is an impressive thing, you'll learn to be tired at that time.
