Ehhh not so much for western RPGs. I love Mass Effect, but the RPG elements haven't ever really been a big reason why that is. Shadowrun Returns and Wasteland 2 are the two great developments for western RPGs this year, but those won't be coming out this year.

P5?!

..Yeah, I wouldn't put too much stock in that.

Still; I wish. :( I want it.
I dunno, saw Mount and Blade 2 on there, the logo and announcement were real and everything. Still, I hadn't thought there were images for P5, and that logo looks a little too much like P4's.

And if this is to be believed, it's on 360 too? I hope so, though I doubt it. Not getting a PS3 at this point. :\

Nah, site said PS3 too. I still don't believe it's going to 360, no matter how much I'd love it to.

And I'd hope it wouldn't be on 360, since I have a PS3... of course, the odds that it'd be on 360 anyway are slim, since the game would have to sell in Japan.

Yeeeeeee...... no, same as always pretty awful year for rpgs, I am sorry but all the game you mentioned are either crappy jrpgs or quest grind games=NOT RPGS. only actual rpg that got released so far is mass effect and was released by EA so not a game for me. The only rpg I was looking forward too was the new neverwinther game and that turned out to just be a crummy wow ripoff. Next year when the south park rpg gets released I might get excited but until then no just no
Well, I'm sorry that you don't consider other kinds of RPGs... well, RPGs. xD That's kinda cute, i guess.
I don't consider them RPG's because they are not rpgs, rpg stands for role playing game, and as I am not playing a role it can hardly be considered role play. Serious these days the publishers call games RPGs based solely on lvl up system and quests. eh HEM THAT IS NOT RPG! I'm sorry but it just itsn't and keep calling it rpgs doesn't make them so.

Well, that doesn't mean you can't share.

If there were any hope of a 360 version, I'd assume it would be exclusive to America and Europe.

I might take a look at the new Tales game, I hear that series is good.
I highly recommend it. The Tales series IS amazing, especially for those that prefer real-time combat as opposed to turn-based. If you're a Final Fantasy fan, Tales is comparable in that each game is a story of its own, none of them are canonically connected(except for Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World being a prequel), and that every single game has a different battle system. It's like FF's real-time counterpart. That's where similarities end, though.

And if you haven't picked up Tales of Graces f yet, you need to(if you're a ps3 owner). If you've got a 3DS, pick up Tales of the Abyss immediately. Find a PS1 emulator and find Tales of Destiny and hook up a controller to your PC. And if you've got a Wii, find someplace online to buy Tales of Symphonia, a Gamecube controller and a memory card(my favorite Tales game, possibly favorite of all time). Although I can't honestly recommend Dawn of the New World. I just feel like that one was made to appease fanboys and fangirls. Also because of CanonBreaking, changed up voice actors and other various issues I have with the game. But yes. They're awesome games.

[sub]Tales of Graces f is made even better if you've played a lot of the previous Tales games, too. References galore...[/sub]

As for me, this year has certainly been a good year. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Tales of Graces f, Tales of the Abyss for 3DS, Dragon's Dogma. I'm quite looking forward to Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance and Persona 4: The Golden.

That "title" is just an embarrassingly awful fan-made video someone made quite awhile back:

OT: There's actually been a decent about of JRPGs this year, which I'm happy about. WRPGs felt kinda lacking though, I mean we got Mass Effect 3 so far but to me everything else has been completely lackluster and... Well, generic fantasy.

Seriously, would it kill WRPG developers to try, oh I don't know, urban fantasy maybe?

Cry some more?

When it comes to RPGs in video games, the term refers solely to the mechanics of the game, which originated in pen and paper games but was incorporated into early titles such as Ultima and Final Fantasy. I'm well aware of that the term 'RPG' stands for, but 'role-playing' has nothing to do with the term when it comes to games. To say otherwise, i.e. to shut your ears and scream lalala, is cute and all, but still incorrect.

Of course. I'd hope that the game wouldn't be system exclusive, just available on the system I own, is what I meant.

Also, on the subject of Mass Effect; would it be fair to say the series underwent a genre shift? It started out very much as an RPG, but underwent a transition into shooterhood? I've always considered ME2 and 3 to be action-RPGs of a sort.

I kind of doubt Atlus would not make it on PS3, but I guess Catherine gives hope for a 360 version. Also, thanks Takeboy, good to have the logo confirmed as real or fake.

Well, I guess I'd say Mass Effect went from being 60-40 RPG-TPS to being more like 40-60 in ME2. Or 70 and 30, if you'd prefer.

Sorry to burst your bubble but what your saying is just incorrect. I know that the term has been raped over a long time, it used to be that the marketing would call what you refer to as an action-RPG. Since RPG is something good but ultimately very hard to produce and as such instead of doing so they just started calling them action-RPGs, but now it seems they don't bother with that anymore and just call them RPGs. but seriously be real, I mean according to you Battlefield 3 is also an RPG since it has a level up system. And for you to fall for this marketing ploy is just proof that the genre is finally dead and there probably won't be released anymore RPGs except from obsidian and CD Project the last bastion of hope. However I don't blame you, I see how you could easily make such mistakes. Truly I urge you go play Baldur's Gate 1 or 2 and see what is real then you will understand, then you will see, release yourself of today's tormentingly bad games influence and cleanse you mind of their corruption.

What I'm looking forward to is the next upcoming year or two when some of these kickstarter RPGs like Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns and Dead State start coming out.
Agreed totally on Wasteland 2, on Shadowrun eh maybe still don't know much about it and for Dead State well I've never been one for those types of games. Still I think the next 2 years are going to be awesome. I'm personally the most excited for Divinity Original Sin.
Yes, I defiantly like everything I'm seeing from Divinity Original Sin, except for the artstyle (mainly the monster design)

But that can be overlooked if the game has alot of other elements that interest me, which it seems to.

You also got Age of Decadence too

lol that is hilarious, and amazing, I really hope a certain escapee see's that and has their usual rage fit over it XD

This was the best year for RPG in a long time. The gloom comes from people wanting not have to wait so long, or fearing they'll have to wait another decade for a year like this. But I'm an optimist, so maybe this is a sign things are turning around and getting better. I think there is hope in the air that fans of all kinds of RPG's are finally being listen to, if not by big names then at least from Kickstarter projects and other small projects.

Let us keep being loud about what it is we want from these games, and maybe we can make this the start of a new wave of RPG games next year. And the next year. And the next.

So, say, Ultima IV's not an RPG because it doesn't give you a dialogue wheel like Mass Effect? Because the turn based combat isn't as refined as later games? But no, the guy above you is quite correct, they originated as pen and paper / table-top games and branched into computers with games like Ultima, Wizardry and Dragon Quest. You'll just never broaden your idea of an RPG past the first ones you played, and so the only new ones you'll ever get will be the sparse line-up of old school Bioware throwbacks.
