I don't think he's retarded, but only because it's impossible for a couple of floating hands to be retarded. There is no such thing as Gordon Freeman, it's just a label for PLAYER 1. Valve gives the illusion of a character to try to cover up the fact that they can't write characters, only archetypes. Really, for Half-Life 3, they should just start calling you Player 1 and stop trying to pull the wool over player's eyes.

Barney was being sarcastic about the switch, Kleiner is grandiose about everything, magnussen is an egotistical prick, and eli treats gordon as an equal, at worst a son-in-law. I've never seen an example of a scientist legitimately talking down to gordon. he doesn't talk because valve didn't want to do the voice acting it's that simple, and by your logic as I understand it, everything else can be put down to him being drunk. yeah my gordon is just kinda wasted and his developers didn't give him a voice.

Autistic would be a better way to put it, he may be slow in other areas, but he makes up for it in being really good at science.
