I don't think freeman should ever speak, I think it would be too off putting to hear the character we love and know as a silent protagonist to suddenly change his entire persona by speaking. And who cares if the protagonist has no personality, I rather like them focusing on developing your companions rather then self.

Gordon let's his guns do the talking, and I'm fine with that. He has little use for fancy words and tawdry one liners. Leave that *&£! to the likes of "Duke Nukem".

Man haven't heard from him like in "Forever".

He doesn't need to talk, all the characters around him are developed well enough so that it feels like they are talking to you. Plus, unless he sounds like House, it would totally kill it for me.

I think he's fine the way he is as well. Same thing with Link. These characters have been etched as the silent badass protagonists. Kinda like how Michael Shanks put it in the final episode of Doomsday Arcade. Answering questions just disappoints people more than satisfies.

Good on them I say, Rare didn't make the Banjo Kazooie characters actually speak for nuts and bolts when every other game on the market was doing it. Sometimes it's better to leave things un-spoiled by the rest of the industry.

It's only right that he remains mute, cos really, WHO would voice him?
Sean connery.

Umm I don't mind if he don't have a voice, I mean if it ain't broke don't fix it. But if he did ssay something it should be Iconic and live on through the ages, and it should be a one liner.

Well, you are not meant to PLAY AS Gordan. You ARE Gordan. You can fill in the gaps. Watch the Mind of Freeman series, and you'll see what I mean.

Oh well, Gordon himself is a TERRIBLE character. No personality or anything...He is the worst kind of protagonist. A silent one who everyone in-game likes for no reason as though he used to talk to them and they developed a close friendship.

In a game world where every other character is so great, Valve could easily make Gordon speak...and have it fit.

Good, if over-rated, games, horrible main character. When a headcrab named Lamarr has more personality then the hero, you've got a shitty hero.

Maybe he should talk Saint's Row 1 style. Like, a single line at the end of every major landmark in the story.

[sarcasm]Also, if they did ever give him a voice, hire Nolan North.[sarcasm]
Well, as I've understood it. He is not a character per say, he is you. Like to Space Marine in DOOM. Making him talk would ruin the whole thing.

Moght be wrong tough.

That's good, if not entirely surprising, to hear. As long as Gordon remains the player character, I don't want to get to KNOW him at all; I want to get to BE him. The character of "Gordon" really only serves as the player's means of interacting with the game world. In fact, I don't really consider silent protagonists like Gordon to be "characters" in their own right; they're simply a persona I take on whenever I slide the game disk into my console. Giving Gordon a personality and voice at this late stage would be pretty jarring and incongruous anyway, even if I did actually prefer talking protagonists over the silent ones.

But, for those of you who still want to hear Gordon speak, there's always the Freeman's Mind machinima ;D

You know what? There is 'Chell's mind' too on youtube. As well as a ton of imitators to Freeman's mind. Ross Scott basically created a genre.
I like to pretend that thing doesn't exist <_< Freeman's mind is great, Barney's mind was good, never watched Adrian's mind.

Chell's mind was just painful.

I'm glad he's mute. It means that it's your personality and feelings that you feel when you play the game and note someone elses. You can allow you imagination to let Gordan be whoever you want him to be.

^^^can only describe how i feel about your response.

VIDEO GAMES ARE NOT THE SAME AS MOVIES!!!!!

But why are you holding them to the same standards and expectations as movies? like that the protagonist MUST be well fleshed out and deep, what you are asking for is like more characterisation in a book told from the 2nd person perspective!

WHY oh F***ing why can so many people get the idea through their heads that Gordon Freeman is DELIBERATELY left an empty shell so that he is easier to inhabit.

How films and books do it: develop the character of protagonist to EMPATHISE with them

How games do it: Give the illusion that you ARE the protagonist so you can more deeply immerse in the world

The more voice acting you give your protagonist, the more automatic actions, the LESS CONTROL you give the player, the more if feels like they are just a director ordering an actor around. if you don't FEEL that you ARE the character in the story then the game has failed in doing the one things games can do and that movies/books cannot.
This person knows whats what

Gordon is the player. Not a character with a pre-defined personality.

I find this a good thing, Valve are sticking to their guns knowing that they do not need to change one of their most iconic characters because they know we love him just the way he is // The fact that Gordon never speaks draws it more into the game as the main character // Always been talked to, been addressed as Gordon and always from a first person perspective as we look through the eyes of Freeman makes us feel that we are Gordon Freeman, saviour of the human race and all around smart ladies man =D

He is intended to have absolutely no personality, so that the player can fill the gap. Even a one-liner when killing something is enough to break this, so I think Valve got it just right.

It is pretty funny watching Alyx trying to have conversations with him, though.

It would be funny if they decided to give him one line at the end of the very last game they make for Half-Life. Where he saves the day and the G-man starts putting him in stasis just incase he'd be needed again, and he just walks away saying "Screw this!!!"
