To be honest i think the game is overrated

the plot is boring its just like gordon is going to point a to point but then point b is moves with no information why

the npcs are hard to connect with or why i should care that they die or not

i dont exactly agree that i should fill in the blanks with gordon we have the game designers for that

im not saying its horrible it must be good somehow lots and lots of people like it but i'll give it 2.5 out of 5 in my scale which is a great big meh
to further expand my argument it was extremly linear so much so if it was more linear it would be a rail shooter

being linear isnt bad but half-life's linearity is bad type for usually it would have a epic cut scene that would make my jaw drop(i.e. cod4's atomic explosion when you were thinking you would go to the next mission)

also again with me having to fill gordon's character that there is no impact on the story whatsoever
the point of having a fixed character is to step into thier shoes because you want to get as far away from your real life as possible and be someone else for a while

one last thing, stop saying freeman deserved it because he saved the world because almost all games today are all about saving the world

First off, it's likely more people voted for The Freeman, not because of the whole "he is you, you are him" personality thing, but because he is the main character of the best game series ever created, bar none.
However, a better choice would have probably been Alyx; a young female hero that expresses quick wit and deep emotion that I believe at least some of us could relate to. Or Dr. Breen, the iconic megalomaniac dictator, that ruthlessly oppresses the the downtrodden citizens of Earth, or Barney or Dog or...I think you get the picture.

Secondly, I would have picked Mario, personally, because he's the iconic video game character. I mean, when you think video games, you think Mario! At least, if you were born before 1995.
Alas, Gordon won and Mario didn't. Tis all good. Though, I do agree it's funny seeing all of those crybabies whining about how it's not fair, and saying "it was rigged!!", and generally getting all upset over nothing. What's Gamespot's primary demographic? 12 year old's?

If this "contest" did anything it hopefully humbled both fanboys and non-fanboys (if there's even such a thing).

hl2 is a gr8 game, i think the reason he's popular is because he has no personality, so you get to substitute your own for his

As much as I love the half life series my vote would have gone for snake.
I agree.
Also Has no one else noticed this

Sorry for the poor quality
Yes I have but I don't get your point
My point is that Snake had more votes but Freeman won anyway.
Snake doesn't have more votes

Gordon has 65982 while Snake has 65863. Unless I'm mistaken Gordon has more votes.
FAIL! (not to you to the person your quoting)

Gordon wins not for what he says or does but because of the LEGEND that is created around him by both the games themselves and the fans.

Half Life 2 he walks in like the freaking messiah to banish the alien overlords, people are constantly talking about him, it is emphasised how the whole combine are hunting him, he is prophesied, he has followers, he's like a geeky Che Guevera

I think he totally deserves to win.

I'll tell what makes him such a great hero.Everything about him is heroic.

And further more,is anyone suprised that he won?.

I'd go for either Cole McGrath (Infamous) - who was a good character that I truly felt sorry for in some of the more pathos-laden moments of that game,

or Sgt. Nathan Hale.

I think that, by 'hero' they are referring to the Player Character

I'm glad to see it was so close between Snake and Gordon but I think what cost it for Snake was the last few games he's been in he has spent way too much time standing around talking when there is supposed to Tactical Espionage Action. And that action wasn't that revolutionary either.

There is some value in silence and I would like to say even as an MGS fan to spite the lack of dialogue Half Life 2 is able to craft in many ways a better story by telling it seamlessly though the gameplay while keeping perfect pacing.

So what makes Freeman the "Greatest Video Game Hero"? Please enlighten me because I'm stupefied.
Lets see, he made it out of the zombie alien giant silo tenticle thing infested black mesa kickin ass, went to xen and defeated the gigantic alien thing niliathan who was ruling(!) xen singelhandedly(!!)! He started a uprising in city 17, broke in AND out of something that was MUCH WORSE then a high security prison. Got in AND trough the citadel to the top, killed dr.breen and his portal, helped dosens of citicens escape city 17 which was about to blow up in a thermonuclear explosion. Got out at the last moment, made it trough to white forest, survived an advisor attack, pretty much singlehandedly killed every single strider that was attacking the missile silo there and saved the rocket, launched the rocket to shut down the combine portal. No amount of combine forces have been able to stop him, not striders, not elite soldiers, not hunters, not headcrabs nor zombies nor physics puzzles. And hes just a man, not a superhero, hes a scientist with a M.I.T degree of kicking ass. ( I didn't count all his achievements there)

Basically you just made a thread where people can whine that they're favorite hero wasn't picked, and then pretend that they don't care, good job dude!

Gordon Freeman won because he has whatever personality and traits you want to him to have. Voting for him is basically voting for yourself.

Anyway, this is Gamespot we're talking about. I wouldn't take the opinions of that particular community to heart.
What s/he said. Gamespot polls is pretty much like reality TV. No matter who wins, everyone involved is still a ballbag.

Please, the runner-up was Mario, the most annoying little prick to have ever been invented.

Besides, the whole point of Gordon's speechlessness (what a peculiar word) is so that the player can embody him. Besides, he's got a fair few achievements under his belt (which I'm guessing you're not well versed in) and he's the star in some of the best games EVAR.

So yeah, he can win all he likes.

P.S. why are people taking this so seriously?

P.P.S. Mario really is an arse hole by the way.

EDIT: Something I glazed over was the fact that Gordon's not generic either (you don't see his design in the games, but still). You'd think him a likely hero born of desperate times, as opposed to some steroid-munching monkey.

Okay he won, whoopty do. Personally I would take even master chief over Freemon, mostly because I hate Half Life though.
But when it comes down to it why does it even matter? It's not like they're telling you who to like.

Im actually going to go with captain Mark Bannon from World in Conflict. He is a very human character who screws up, is jealous on the faceless main commander but sacrifices himself so they can win the day. Then again hes not a main character but still.

You can make him out to waht ever you want him to be. I had a look at some other results and I was that Garret the character in the Thief series lost to Frogger. I don't want to be the one to tell Yahtzee one of his favorite stealth game characters lost to a frog.

I love the half-life games, but Gordon Freeman is more like a player-avatar than a legitimate character. My favorite video game protagonist is still Guybrush Threepwood.

You guys do realize that gordon only won because Valve plastered "GO VOTE FOR GORDON ON GAMESPOT AND WE'LL GIVE YOU DISCOUNTS ON STUFF WITH HIM IN IT!!" all over steam right?
Wrong, no discounts were mentioned, so it wasn't bribery.
Exactly, I saw no such message
