So Gamespot does their annual match up where people vote on their favorite heroes from video games. And Gordon Freeman wins yet another such contest. Does anyone else think this is bullshit since Gordon Freeman isn't even really a character? He has almost zero characterization, limited dialogue, and a one-dimensional personality. His achievements are...well...surviving some fucked up experiments, I guess?

So what makes Freeman the "Greatest Video Game Hero"? Please enlighten me because I'm stupefied.

i agree, i dont think he belongs there. sure, his actions are great, but hes as bland as non space marines gets.

my personal choice for this award would probably be Soap MacTavish. he has characterization, and he actually saved the world from Zakhaev´s nuclear strike.

im not saying this as a COD4 fanboy, but think about it. he saves the bloody world, and survived the incredibly cruel ending.

Because he's the protagonist in what is often considered (rightly in my opinion) one of the best game series of all time?

I'm not sure how familiar you are with Half Life, but just because he doesn't speak whatsoever doesn't mean that he's not a hero. He is The One Free Man, and in the game world he's kind of a big deal. I'd even say that he's the right man in the wrong place, but it's been said already.

And not talking doesn't mean he's got no character

Gordon Freeman won because he has whatever personality and traits you want to him to have. Voting for him is basically voting for yourself.

Anyway, this is Gamespot we're talking about. I wouldn't take the opinions of that particular community to heart.

its like the chuck norris arguement - he made a few good low budget action movies, and BAM hes a living legend on the internet. Gordons reputation is ovverated, although I would still like to see who would win in a fight between the freeman and...the chief.

gordon freeman is a man of few words, a survivor at heart he is intelligent enough to graduate from M.I.T. (don't know what that is), is a dead set legens and obviously has leader ship skills from the way people follow him to probable death. he is fairly awsome also game spot is a community of retards (metal gear solid game 4 of the year 08 WTF! i say mgs4 worst game or peace of entertainment in the history of mankind) before any one responds to this comment keep in mind its about gordon freeman so forget what i said about mgs

The man survived Black-Mesa, on his own!(basically) He didn't have an awesome Lt. Price or Gaz to help him, all he had were a few barney clones. He also single handily made the crow bar into the zombie/alien/combine/scientist smashing melee weapon we know today.

The man was revolutionary, he even had a goatee and glasses

You guys do realize that gordon only won because Valve plastered "GO VOTE FOR GORDON ON GAMESPOT AND WE'LL GIVE YOU DISCOUNTS ON STUFF WITH HIM IN IT!!" all over steam right? Before valve started bribing people to go vote for him the gamespot community was going to vote the Mario Bros in as greatest game heroes. Or so I've read in the steam forums after the dust settled.

By a very long shot he's not the greatest game hero, and fer f's sake its gamespot just another website in millions running a giant poll that no one really cares about.

I'm a Half-Life fan, and naturally, I want to have sex with Gordon Freeman. However, he doesn't really stand up as one of the better gaming heroes as the guy doesn't even speak - in fact he's never even seen outside of game box and concept art because there are no cutscenes and he doesn't even have a character model in the second game (he's literally two floating arms holding a gun with the camera mounted in the correct position so you can't see his missing body parts)

Because we are a narcississtic bunch and he is simply a silent vessel for us to channel our own personality through.

He is also a geeky, glasses wearing science head who like to shoot stuff... in other words he's a gamer.

I don't understand it and i never will. Personally i would have voted for HK-47. But i guess the meatbags and gamespot don't understand true greatness.

The greatest game hero is Link. There shouldn?t even be a debate here people! The entire contest should have been just the links from different Zelda games.

So Freeman ended up winnin that eh? I had Master Chief going to the final and winning (was counting on the fanboys to carry him) stopped caring when he was eliminated in the first round and knew my bracket was shot.

I guess to answer your question Freeman is liked by the Gamespot community...really don't have any other reasons to why because I agree with all points mentioned...Must be likable I guess
