this is nearly the same question as "should graphics be more realistic or more believable"
gore does not ever look realistic in games, although if you feel different, please link a video to the example.
i would rather play a game that is believable than realistic and OTT head exploding just doesnt work for me.

still chose bloody mess as a perk on 2nd playthrough tho...

Gore can be fun if done right in the juvenile, immature sort of way.Go ahead with the bodies exploding, heads getting decapitated and limbs dismembered, but make sure that we know it's all just for lulz.

I know what's written above sounds weird, but what I'm trying to say is that violence is fine when you do it because it's the name of the game, and the gore should reflect that.

If we get realistic gore than the killing becomes realistic and when it does it becomes slightly disturbing. You start question why you play the game in the first place, and things become generally uneasy.

Of course, gore is just a detail, if the game is good I personally wouldn't notice if not a single drop of blood was spilled.

I think there's definitely a place for gore in games, and a certain way of doing it. I don't want to see people's heads popping due to small-arms fire; what I do want is visual feedback of how much damage my shots are doing. I'd love to see developers include exit wounds into their damage model. That would add a fair bit to the visual impact of gore, methinks.

Nothing beats Dwarf Fortress's satisfying moments in gore.
For example: cutting someone in half by throwing vomit at them.

As long as it fits with the game like in God of War it's brought to point of being impressively beautiful

Gore is great in games that use it for realism or as a scare tactic. But not all games need gore, some games are great when they are unrealistic, i mean who wants to see their favorite hero disemboweled. Anyway, developers probably don't spend that much on good looking gore because its just an aesthetic thing, not really anything really integral to game play.

But what if there was a game in which the gore was integral to the game play. Can anyone say intestine lasso.

it makes it wholly all the more satisfying for.... some reason I'm not entirely sure about.

This goes in the "realism" category, so I believe gore is important to gameplay.

In Half-Life, Diablo, and Fallout, gore adds realism to a game. And for me, it can add immersion.

Also, when I say Fallout, I'm talking about the first.

To be honest I thought the gore in Fallout 3 was a nice touch.

I really couldn't care less if a game has lots of gore or none at all, as it barely affects gameplay at all.

Gore's great, look at the first two Fallout games (not that piece of crap third game, that gore is rubbish).
Yes, killing the Overseer and Lou was quite nice.

yeah the gore ads a bit to the game
Said the man with the Gear's logo for his avatar XD

Anyway on topic. Gore is fine and all, but it does bog the game down when used wayyyy to much. Like people exploding and body parts go everywhere. It's just terrible.

I don't mind gore but I prefer when the gory violence are more subtle. To compare, CoD 4 and WaW have the same engine and lets face the MP are just the same. I was rather suprised when I noticed that I prefered CoD 4's just drop dead to WaW arms legs everywhere, where the latter is more realistic.

[sub]My choice might also lean to CoD 4 because I consider WaW as a cheap copy of CoD 4[/sub]

It adds to the effect of the world, the idea that you're murdering something sentient that dedicated it's thought process to trying to kill you and you returned the favor.
Not that I promote real violence, but making a game's world more believable is great.
Nothing beats assassinate the president with a minigun, right?

Realistically rendered axe murders and such I can take, but some things just don't belong in public view.

Do not need it, but can add realism that hacking at someone with a sword will not leave a nice corpse.

fallout 3 has pretty realistic gore, heads explode and you can see eyes and bits of jawbone flying through the air.
Oh, yeah.
Totally.

I remember, the last time I shot someone in the head with a pistol that was a few hundred years old, their head exploded.

Yeah.
That happened.

I don't mind gore.
It makes killing all the more fun.

Probably laziness or unwillingness, incidentally.
Just his head? Man I shot guys in the head and thier limbs were flying every which way. It made a bloody mess nyuck yuck yuck.

I like my games how I like my steaks. Bloody as hell.

Sometimes it doesn't add anything to a game, an example being the zelda series. If those games had a ninja gaiden or mortal kombat approach to violence they,

A) Wouldn't be as previlent in our gaming culture. An M rateing means a game is only destined to be played by a certain kind of gamer (hopefully one over 17).

B) They wouldn't be a Legend of Zelda game. Instead of story telling and exploration driveing the experiance it would be nonstop slaughtering action (again ninja gaiden).

C) It would become a "Spectacle Fighter" (A phrase coined by Yahtzee) basicly a game in which you are given dozens of combos for killing someone and get mega points for a super awesome kill.

Gore has it's place true but often to be implimented fully it has to be a focus of the game. Say gears 2, where it is a major focus, or fallout 3 which relies heavily on gore for its horror element.

Gore has to be condusive to the game.
