How would that even work? How can you make a Gran Turismo movie if there aren't even any characteristics (beyond cars) to them...

Also
An adaptation of the long running Need for Speed franchise is due to be released early in 2014.
I thought we already had that and it was called Fast and Furious.

Well, at least the fact that there's no characters, or storyline to the games means that there isn't anything for the movie studio to ruin.

Well, we're already getting a very good film about racing:

And because racing movies generally suck, I have no reason to believe a GT movie will be any good. One way to save it is to have legendary actor PAUL WALKER in it, though. Fingers crossed...

I think they've actually made 6 of them now.

Why is the idea of a Gran Turismo movie so strange to people? It'd just be a movie about racing cars. Tons of films have already done it.

Probably for the simple fact that there has never been a story to GT or any characters in the game. People aren't questioning making a movie about racing, they are questioning why they chose a game with no story or characters.

"How in the fuck will this work?!" is the first thing I said, litterally out loud, when I heard about this. And I'm the kind of weirdo who thinks the Need For Speed movie makes sense and has even thought one could make a movie out of Ridge Racer (using the story of RR: Type 4 specifically).

I mean, Gran Turismo has never had any characters or story or anything to it. I guess one could make it just about pure racing with very little dialog here and there, ala the 1971 Le Mans film. Or a racing movie with an excuse plot just so there's some sort of story, ala Grand Prix. But, well, I'd seriously doubt that sort of thing could be successful, especially considering one of those two examples I gave was a flop at the box office.

....Hahahaha! *wipes away tear* Your blind optimism in that statement is hilarious. No...no they'll find something to ruin. If they have to they will purposefully seek it out.

Woo thanks for the laugh buddy. That's a good one.

Who bets that either Vin Diesel, The Rock, or some other wall of muscle will end up being the lead?
(Not saying anything against either Vin or Rock, I think they're both great guys and good actors even.)

Seems like a cheap attempt to use a well known name in the gaming community to lure some fans of the series. Like so many others already mentioned, there is no story or characters in the series so as long as the movie has cars it can't mess up that badly.

Simple. They make a movie about professional car racing and the racers. And instead of calling it an original name, they call it the name of a popular game. Hence more people will go see it because of the name. I had this problem with World War Z. The movie was surprisingly good. And I would have liked it a hell of a lot more if I wasn't watching it going "...this isn't World War Z...please...why did you call it this? This should've been a mini-series on HBO.".

It's basically a marketing ploy. The same thing partially happened with DooM, although they did take a few names from DooM 3...even if they removed the central point of the games (I.E. Hell, and all things supernatural).

The same thing will probably happen with Need for Speed. Although, one could argue they might take the (thin) plot from Most Wanted, with the...that group you have to beat being a major gang or something. Because after the first film, a movie about street racing wouldn't really be like Fast and Furious series.

Unlike others here, my first thought was not "what? How? WHAT?!", it was more a question of, "why now?" Gran Turismo is not exactly as big and well loved as it was a couple of consoles generations ago. In fact I don't even know when the last game came out, nor can I recall ever seeing a copy of any of them beyond like, GT2 that 1 friend had years ago.

Maybe I just don't have many (any) friends who are into GT and so the series has entirely passed me by over the years, but, who IS still interested in this series?

They'll ruin it alright

I can imagine the story now: nameless driver attempts to get his racing licenses and we see him perform the same challenges countless times missing out by about 100th of a second each time. Well thats how it pans out everytime i play it

The Stig does not simply walk into Mordor.

He drives.
Lord of the ring. The nurburg ring
The Two Towrings. The Return Of The Ring. The Hobbit: An Unexpecting Ringing.

... Wait, WTF has that got to do with anything?

Very nice, both of you.

In order to avoid a possible warning, I'll add that since GT has no character or story, if the movie is too focused on racing, racing, racing, why not watch a real race instead?

There are 9 movies if you count the 2 short films and F&F 7 that's coming out next year
