You started out so promising when you said you'd played every GTA game.
And then you disregarded everything but SA...
I was on the fence whether I want to buy this game.
And after reading this review I'm still up here.
Haven't enjoyed a GTA since 2 btw.
Funny piece of text though, maybe written a little bit too 'hip' but you didn't let it slow you down throughout.
It's difficult to recommend GTA IV to players who enjoyed 1 and 2, but not SA, 3, or Vice City - the games are just so different.
If you haven't already, definitely give it a rental, though. It's the closest thing to 1 and 2 in this generation, and if you can't enjoy the similarities between GTA 4 and the first 2, you might be able to appreciate the story.
Also, thanks for the writing compliment. It is much appreciated.

I don't get why people like the story. It's all pretty predictable and has very little effect on the actual gameplay at any point. In SA, you think you've nearly completed the game with a mansion and everything, then suddenly the LA riots break out and you have to take back your territories. It's great fun and a twist on the story. Nothing similar happens in 4. What, the American Dream isn't real for everyone? Really. Didn't know that.
Totally agree about the missions, way simplified and on rails. One time, in that mission where you have to climb on top of a van to get it, I saw the van starting to drive away, so I sniped the driver. There was a big splat of blood, so I was like 'yay!'... until I realised the van was still driving on its predetermined route and I would have to run after it and do that stupid roof-climbing thing anyway. So, in essence - I had to do that mission EXACTLY as the game told me, and that's pretty true for every other mission. It's a recurring problem for all of the 3D games of GTA.
The only thing that saves GTA4 is the chaotic car chases and shootouts and explosions, which are as fun as ever.
I liked the story because it didn't insult my intelligence, like the other 3-D GTA games. Don't get me wrong, I loved the stories of the other games, it was just nice to play a game that has a morale to the story.

Bring back the Goranga monks!
My biggest problem with GTA 4 wasn't the graphics, driving or the physics engine. It was the repetition and grind in the missions. It was always a variation on 'go here, kill that guy, come back'. I felt the mission in previous GTA incarnations to be more varied and ultimately more fun. GTA 4 is a fantastic game, just not one you can enjoy over and over again like you could with previous GTA's.
I also don't like the music in this one. Vice City and San Andreas had better sound tracks and funnier talk radio IMO.
Agreed about the missions - like I said in the review. I sincerely disagree about the soundtracks, though. I thought GTA4 had a better selection of music and funnier talk shows. Granted, there wasn't as many hits included, but I'm fine with that.
