There is something very, very wrong with those people. Surely this is illegal... right? Surrogate mother aside, of course.

They should not be allowed to have a child together. Even with a surrogate, there seems to be a very real possibility of severe disabilities. Not only that, but what about when the child goes to school? "My dad is my nephew and my mother's his grandma?" My God, the kid will never be able to live a normal life. And then there's the factor of his mother being likely to die before s/he is out of high school.
Yay! Someone finally worked out what a surrogate is!! *high five*

Now, to the "severe disabilities": the answer lies in "donor egg". If it's only genetically related directly to Phil (and remotely as a great-grandma to Pearl) how does this in any way increase the likelihood that it will be disabled?

You can repeat it all you want, that doesn't make it right. The baby still even though it is going to be born from a different mother, will still have a very low chance of survival.
How not? It's a normal baby, whose biological dad is Phil, and who will be adopted by Pearl. It has an equal chance of survival as any other normal, healthy baby, since essentially, that's what it is. Grandma not only doesn't have any viable eggs (ergo the use of a donor egg), she also can't carry the baby (ergo the use of a surrogate) thereby there is no inbreeding and no chance of hurting the baby. It's just like every other baby, except that it's adoptive mother is related to it's biological dad. Which is creepy, but apart from mentally, isn't going to harm the baby. And even then, it won't mentally harm the baby; that's more likely to occur when it gets older.

Still not saying I agree with the decision, but it's not my choice to make.
This will be the last time I reply to any of your comments at the risk of causing a flame war. But you might want to read up on some biology, especially the role meiosis plays in a man and in the fertilization of an egg, which will happen even if they go the path of a surrogate mother. I know what I'm talking about here.

Doesn't this occur in pretty much every pregnancy, animal or human? It would concern me if the biological parents were related, but since they aren't, then in plain English, what's the cellular harm to the resultant baby?

Two consenting adults, very much in love, are having a kid from a surrogate mother. The surrogate has no problem with the couple taking and raising the child. All fairly normal, except the couple is related. I always find it funny how one detail can turn something from "aww" to "eww"

The only problem I could find would be the child but since it's being conceived by a surrogate its a non-issue. So it all comes down to the taboo of incest and I have real issue with taboo's since, you know, I actually like using my brain.

From what I gather incest is "wrong" because:

1) The magic wizard in the sky said so in his biography.
2) Mummy and Daddy told me it is.
3) It's icky.

Yeah... I don't buy those. Give me a logical, scientific reason as to why these two or any other incestuous couple being together is wrong, other than the conception of a child as it isn't an issue in this case. Until then I'd quite like to step out of this ball pit of confused and frightened children.

PS: ITT a mob of people screaming to the heavens about how a couple who has never harmed nor wronged them or in fact committed any crime at all is "sick" or "fucked up" or "twisted". Oh how far we've come as a species.
Incest is biologically wrong as the genes are too similar, the child will have a far weaker immune system- in our human society rather than the child dying from diseases (because of healthcare) or being abandoned by the mother and left to starve (because we have child services) we still have a genetically imprinted things like this so we know that a child like this will be- how do I put this- piss in the gene pool, society will outcast these individuals to stop them passing down their genes.

I mean would you have sex with your mum/ sister?
NO because it is genetically imprinted into you

What. The. Fuck. This is the most screwed up thing i've ever heard of (this month). Well good luck to them I guess. Hope the baby doesn't end becoming a serial killer or something.

That baby is (in all likelihood) going to be one fucked up kid.

His mother's over SEVENTY, meaning the chances he'll be born with a mental disability are far greater than if she had him at thirty, and the fact that the relationship is incestuous won't do much to help.

Christ, I feel bad for the poor child. He's going to have a rough school life, that's for sure.
Adoptive mother. She will not carry the baby, nor will it be her egg. Please explain how this will then damage the baby?
Ah. It appears that I missed that part.
However, my point about school going to be hell for him remains valid.

But the child is being born from a surrogate mother. There isn't a risk of defective genes and no I wouldn't have sex with my mother or sister, simply because I've been raised with them being my mother and sister and not just another woman. Genes have nothing to do with it.

thats pretty disturbing I mean morally for me I think the relationship is wrong. And the child will probably not have the best childhood

Not a day goes by that I don't read a fucked-up story like this. I'm glad Japan got a break and let America have a turn with insanity.
