I'm definitely a fan of form over function, so I would take an excellent story over great graphics.

That said, if the graphics are below a certain standard, I would not be terribly likely to enjoy it much. That standard is fairly low (roughly, if it can at least match Baldur's Gate 2 level of graphical fidelity), but it does exist.

Depends the game

FPS? Probably graphics, cause there are few FPS that manage story with gameplay.
RPG? Story, no contest.

Etcetera and so forth.

Edit:A perfect example of this is Cave Story, which I adore.

I have a soft spot for the old school so graphics aren't that important to me. I love me some SNES.

Geez, this again. Even if it has bad graphics, a game can still have a good aesthetic. I definately have to say story. But I still think that good gameplay is better than both story and graphics.

I would choose the game with a great story because the story of a game is what can make me really want to keep playing a game. Also the story of a game is more memorable to me than graphics, I have found that I don't usually remember a game because it had good graphics, I remember a game by its gameplay or story.

Personally, graphics make little or no effect on my opinion of a game. I'll always lower graphics if it makes the game run better.
On the other side, a story is vitally important to me. Mass Effect is my favourite series for this very reason. Sometimes a good story will even let me get past poor gameplay, such in the event of Silent Hill.

I just can't play a game with crappy story :S
personally I just don't see the point of having flashy graphics that could ever impress Yahtzee if you don't have a good story to back it up with

I love Minecraft, and that has neither.

Those are actually wise words. Agreed, gameplay should indeed trump both every time.

I prefer Mass Effect 1...

Joking aside, Visuals will wow me for all of five minutes however a stupid story will (and has many times) stop me from playing the game anymore.

A good story will keep me interested regardless of the graphics(bad gameplay might ruin the game for me though, even if the story was amasing. {ex. Unlimited Saga}).

Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube is my favorite non-Nintendo game for the console, bar-none. It had a great story and is a game I've clocked in more hours than I can imagine. Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World looks better than it's predecessor and of higher quality, but I've yet to finish the game because it just bored me near the end.

Insofar as RPGs go, the story needs to compel me to complete it or it has failed.

It's really subjective since I doubt you'd be playing World War II FPS #7 because you think the Nazis will win. And if you are, a story is the least of your concerns.

Killzone 2. Great graphics, cool fascist aesthetic, dull story. Doesn't stop the game from being really fun, but the average story leaves a lot hanging, so it isn't completely satisfying in the long run.

Crap graphics, great story. May I refer you to "Legend of the Dragoon," as opposed to the waste of development that was "Call of Duty: Black Ops."

depends on the what im playing it for:

Multiplayer: usually graphics, but the deciding factor is gameplay

Singleplayer: story, all the way.

Time Wasting: graphics cuz a story can get old.

Or what genre it is:

FPS: usually benefits from graphics more

Strategy(turn based): story
Strategy(real time): graphics

RPG: story, because an rpg usually needs to be compelling for me to care to play it.

Puzzle/physics/etc: obviously this would be story, because i honostly care about that unicorn in peggle /sarcasm

Non-electronic games: ...go fuck yourself.

Story, hands down. I don't care how pixelated the models are, if the story is captivating and the characters convincing I'll enjoy the shit out of it.

Hell, books have the worst graphics of all don't they? :p

Nope because it got awesome Aesthetics.

And related to that, as long as the game has good Aesthetics graphics can go cry in a corner for all I care.
