I laughed when I say the title and author of this thread.
Let me try to think of another example...

Nope I can't remember.
Does Anti-Mormon literature count? That stuff is so wrong it's hilarious.
Any more wrong than Mormom literature?

The obvious geeky sort of answer would be the Necronomicon of course.
Arguable. Sort of. The book is pretty pro-war, and anyone watching the movie gets the opposite feeling.

Summed up as: Is it so bad it's good? Or was it purposefully set up as a parody?
The book is not necessarily pro or anti war, it is a complex and detailed look at society and political intrigues and methodology. Specifically, "Through Rico's eyes, Heinlein examines moral and philosophical aspects of suffrage, civic virtue, the necessities of war and capital punishment, and the nature of juvenile delinquency." (cit, wiki). Just because the book investigates the necessity of, say, war, does not necessarily insinuate that it condones it.

It is widely criticised as not good (though I watch it and "forget" the book so that it's just a movie with lots of shooting), and if it's parodying then, like I said earlier, it's only working on the first chapter.

There's only one pair of wrong hands I can think off!

But..on topic, I'd have to agree with the bible. I mean, I don't think it's a bad book, some nice ideas, like the mythology too, however...

Incredibly more so. Read the Book of Mormon. Still not sure how I feel about it... I have heard some of the lies put out against the Mormon's. Most of it is wrong. And by wrong, I mean they do NOT eat babies, wrong, not, They think Wednesday is the Sabbath wrong.
More wrong than Native Americans being the lost Children of Israel? Mmmm, really, interesting.

Good books in the wrong hands? Well, considering today's culture, we're lucky if people have a book in their hands ever. Today reading a book for pleasure is almost a sign that a person has enough of a soul to not gorge themselves on television. Books may be misused and misinterpreted, but let me tell yah, no one will feel the need to burn books when nobody reads them anymore.

You're talking about the true necromonicon, by HP lovecraft right?

Only the fourth post? I was expecting someone to bring that up sooner.

I'm a Christian, and I've gotta say, I don't think I could agree more. It hurts me so much to see how many people fuck up the Good Book to justify anything.

We all know how that turned out.

While I have no qualms with the Good book itself, there are some people that misinterpret it to their own benefit. We see it all the time, and its older than Christianity.
Yep, sometimes I want to ask, "Did you actually understand that book?"

Hear, hear! (Or is it "Here, here"?)
Though of course I don't think that any sane (read: SANE) person would claim to entirely understand it, most people should be able to get the gist of "love thy neighbour" etc out of it without much trouble. Anyway, I feel that if I let my blood boil any longer, I'll end up starting an argument, and antagonism really isn't one of my aims.

Here is my theory on the bible.
The Bible was originally just an epic novel with a huge fan base, but after a while people kept talking about it and showing it and reading it to their children and after several generations their children's views on reality became warped...

Darwin's works are typically perverted into meaning something they do not. Poor Charles...
Strangely enough he tried to say that all human races were equal because we are all decended from apes thus nun are supirior to the eyes of god, but unfortunately with his theory is often misquoted giving some people the idea of a master race...
There are two things I disagree with Adolph Hitler, invading Russia and his idea on a master airian race, HE SHOULD KNOW BETTER! I mean everyone knows that it is the spanish that are the master race.

Would any other great book possibly be in the wrong hands ;)

Then again what would be the right hands for that epic tome.

Pretty much any book that has made a statement about anything has been abused at some point for someone's benefit... It's just the way it goes. All the most famous books in history have been perverted at some point for the sake of an agenda... These days it's become even more prelevant. A annoying example is how some high-up cardinals can pitch a fit about certain books of fiction. Please don't make this cause a flood of Church-hating posts though, as we all know what I'm talking about. No further need to discuss it.

It all doesn't seem to matter in the end though... people these days don't read as much as they used to. I'm pretty confident that F451 will soon become a possibility, unless the school systems get themselves in shape.

Fuck me, Robert A. Heinlein FTW!

I totally agree, and on personal note, my LT when I was active duty in the Army was an extra in that piece of cow dung.

Curiosity leads me to ask what other Heinlein have you read?

Seeing as this is full of everyone saying the bible, I shall say the Koran.

I can't believe it took this many posts for this book to be mentioned. People have used it to justifiy rapeing scantly clad women and say that it tells them to kill non-believers.

Recently in the 1984 discussion thread the topic of "vegan, hippy, teenage girls" screwing up great books by warping their meaning beyond belief. This generally includes trying to look more intelligent, bringing up an idea within a book constantly without a firm grasp of it, and attempting to justify ideas/positions by using literature by great authors.
This happens everytime we read something in my English class. I hate it.

Hmm, on the shelf atm I have: Rocket Ship Galileo, Red Planet, Starship Troopers, The Number of the Beast, Stranger in a Strange Land, and Citizen of the Galaxy.

Back onto thread topic, I was really disappointed with the way the "Bram Stokers Dracula" movie was done too.

I tend to hate a lot of book-to-movie stuff though... which is funny coz I love some of the old Frankenstein's Monster portrayals.

I don't think so. If the goal of a book is to inspire prejudice or antipathy and it actually does inspire prejudice or antipathy, it's not really being misunderstood, is it?

They seem to be hewing pretty close to Pullman's intent to me. (Not that I think the author's intended message was really all that well-chosen...)

Beat me to it, I was going to say this myself.

Seriously, when you look at the teachings of the Koran and then look at ALL Islamic extremist groups and Muslim radicals, the first words out of your mouth will be "Where the fuck did they get THAT from?" Bloody hell, the Koran and Muhammad himself specifically condemn suicide, no matter the reason, and it is one of the only truly unforgivable sins in Islam...Yet here we have Islamic groups saying "Okay, the Koran says that, if you blow yourself up in a crowded marketplace and kill a ton of people, you go to Paradise and will be worshiped! Now go do it!" The way they go about jihad and martyrdom are also grossly twisted from the original teachings.

It is like all the Islamic radicals used a Sharpie to cross out the things they don't like and rewrite whole verses the way they want them. Pretty much ALL of their beliefs and actions are either not actually from the Koran, are twisted to mean something they aren't supposed to, or are completely ass backwards opposite of what the Koran says. I serious wonder if any of these Islamic terrorist groups actually read the Koran sometimes...

I'm not even going to get into groups like Abu Sayyaf...They are even worse. They are the equivalent of a common street gang raping, stealing, and killing while waving around a Bible and saying "God says it is all okay as long as we say it is all for him!" They aren't even fighting for a cause or anything...They are just common, greedy thugs and mercenaries that claim that the Koran says that everything they do is just fine if they say it is for the jihad and Allah.
