So, I was playing Red Dead Redemption, which is great y'all, and I realised that finally there exists an open world game that lets you replay missions. Why did it take this long to implement?

So, Escapists, what features get you annoyed at the fact that they're left out, when they would make the game better?

Sub-question: What do you think of the mission replay system?

Umm... there are other open world games that let you do that... Prototype for one...

As for what I wish was used more often... I wish developers would use the "factions" system more than the bullshit "good-evil morality bar".

I miss the days of "Game Over" meaning something, nowadays you can so easily just reload from 2 minutes before, or "hit x to retry from checkpoint". How are kids meant to learn that punching a grizzly bear in the face is a bad idea, if there's no consequences from their actions.

Actually I was discussing this just a little while ago, games are easy now. I mean they may have a challenge here and there (Looking at you Dead Space) but pretty much all video games can be played through with very little risk cause Game Over means nothing at all. I'm sure that over half the kids playing xbox or ps3 wouldn't stand a chance against the old NES games like Battletoads.

Hehe, now those were the days. Hell most games didn't even have a save/checkpoint system. So if you started a game it was either finish or quit and start over.

To say nothing of some of those game's punishing difficulties.

The ability to customise controls, because shooting with r2 sucks, it doesn't actually feel like a trigger.

Seeing shell casings on the ground (go Lead and Gold!).

Bodies never fading.

Bullet holes never fading.

Also, a well implemented knife. Most games knives feel like a sharp punch (MW2).

Killing baby seals. I played the Overlord 2 demo, and to this day cannot understand why this feature isn't more popular. I say, kill the little shits!

Baldur's Gate 2 pretty much ruined the RTS genre for me for a short while because I got used to being able to pause the game and then give different units commands that they would execute when I unpaused. I really like that pause-and-issue-commands feature. Also, it would be nice if the games that do implement it would also implement proper cueing of commands.

The single great feature that is rarely implemented, hmm split screen co-op. Seems to be going out the window recently, my mate even bought a racing game which didn't have it... yeah a racing game, a game purely about multiplayer racing cars.

MW2 is a sorry excuse for co-op, I should've looked it up really but from what I heard, MW2 was going to be co-op and you could go online. While the statement is true, me and my mate were expecting to do the campaign then go blow shit up on the multiplayer.. we were dissapointed.. this is why Halo wins for me. Then you have Fable 2 which isn't really.. maybe it's better online but being a henchman and stuck to the main character with a 2 metre dog lead doesn't feel like co-op. Ah well.. hats off to games that realise some gamers still have "in-person" friends, being on your own with a headset isn't as fun..

If you're serious, and I hope you are, this game is pretty great.

I totally agree. I really enjoyed GTA2's factions, and I wish more games implemented them. Games shouldn't be an obvious good vs an obvious evil choice. They should be about which batshit insane faction you want to ally yourself with. the Way of the Samurai games do a pretty good job of faction stuff, though I've not yet played teh 3rd one

The reason most RTS games don't have this is cause they're "real time." Also, the reason most RTS games don't have strategy is cause they're "real time." ;) You should play more turn-based strat games

Offline mulitplayer bots. I can think of only one game I own that has them, and that's Timesplitters 2.

A combination of unregenerable health bar and regenerable shields.

Halo: CE managed to get it right the first time, and nobody followed that example.

The Ballad of Gay Tony did it first.

Saints Row 2 did it before that!
OT: Not sure. It all depends on preference, though I would like to see some more features like Just Cause 2's parachute/hook.
