Chalk [http://konjak.org/section.php?section=chalk] is pretty amazing. The gameplay's fun, and the music is really something else. It's the kind of game that makes you wish more stuff like it was available on the Nintendo DS.

It's pretty hard to find a working link to it, but once you do, and you find the custom server bases, Tribes is an amazing freeware game.

Tremulous, it's a quake-like freeware game that spread round school like wildfire. So much fun until they banned it.

No one suggested the Aleph One port of Marathon yet?!
It was a FPS made by Bungie before they were bought by micro$oft. It's basicly 3 full games for free, with a huge backstory. Works for all major operating systems. Try it, it's for free after all (and it pwns)

EDIT: Ah , some posts above me someone mentioned the Marathon trilogy in a list. Anyway, those are the links.

ground control is available for free now, i used to love that game so much.
But what about the sequel, "Major Tom?"

Anyway, I heard some guys are working on a (supposedly legal) Freeware version of the DOOM wads. Not sure if that's true or not.

The Ur-quan Masters is one of the best freeware games out there.
You should listen to this guy, for he speaks the words of wisdom and unveiled truth.

To actually offer something new, I´d suggest trying Cave Story (haha...new, yeah) or Knytt Stories. Remember, it´s always a story time.

EDIT: Oh, just remembered: The original Command & Conquer is also a freeware.

Thanks for the links! Really, I never played these games when they first came out and just never got around to actually buying them but I have heard a lot of good things about both.

IWBTG is so fun! I started playing last week on medium, and I've beaten Tyson, Mecha Birdo, Dracula, and now I'm at the Kraidgief fight.

That game...it makes me want to murder people. >:|

Nethack, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, Dwarf Fortress, Counterclockwise: A Knot in 3D Remake, Rescue: The Beagles, and Spelunky do come to mind at the mention of freeware, though. They're all great fun.

I love Yoyogames. I have not made a single game because I have been too busy playing other people's. Anything by Virtanen or 2Dcube is great, my personal favourites being Karoshi 2, Virtual Silence, and The Manipulator. Execution makes you think, but it's no real fun. I loved Punishment, as well as You Made It. 1213 and Art of Theft are Yahtzee's best games, I recommend Odysseus Kent to those looking for a good laugh, X Days a Sauerkraut for those who value story, and Rob Blanc to nobody because I didn't care for it.

Despite all the hate for EA and the obvious TF2 connections, Battlefield Heroes is really fun. DICE did a good job on it.
