Great Game you DON'T like?

Good faith effort to be Search Bar approved.

Ive noticed that people naturally express there bias. If they don't like a game, it's always a bad game, if they do, then either it's a big seller or under-appreciated. So I'd like to present a little subversion, to get people to think about critically analyzing games instead of just stating there personal preference: What games do you recognize are great, but just don't enjoy? Have you ever seen a game that you can list nothing but good things about, but you just...can't enjoy yourself?

Personally, I never really enjoyed Street Fighter 4. Wonderful game, great art style, impressive method of combining all the strengths of 2D and 3D graphics, solid, balanced and interesting game play that's accessible to new player without minimizing the skill of experienced player...and every time I played I felt like I was just pressing a button until the other guy fell down. It just never clicked for me, even though I traditionally like many varieties of fighting games.

Also, I never liked Metroid. And frankly, that one I REALLY can't explain. I recognize it as great intellectually, but for some reason, the rest of my brain doesn't.

Hmm... I was going into the thread making a smartass comment on how paradoxical it was to dislike a game you thought great, but I guess you're a bit more rational about it than I first recognized by your title. Apologies are in order.

Anyway, I can't really give any solid examples, as games are based on subjective opinions, and I'm a kind of gamer who don't have any specific taste. If it's a good game, odds are high I'll like it.

This is a repeat thread, but the game i would think that's popular that i don't like is MW2. I just don't like the subpar campaign.

My opinions are perfectly matching the truth. When I say a game is bad, it is not because of fanboyism or trolling, it is because it is bad.

too be fair this has been done alot it's just you've worded it different so it wouldn't appear on the search bar list.
How were they worded? I saw a few that were similar (For example, popular games that you don't like), but didn't see games that people actually think are well made, but by some fluke happen to not enjoy.

Half-Life and its first sequel are two of the most poorly designed games I've seen in my life. If I knew you could stick poorly made design in a game and call it 'puzzle-based', I'd have gone rich with my revolutionary game 'Flashing Lights and Loud Noises'.

It gets better in the episodes, although the ep2 final battle is one of my greatest disappointments in gaming.

Can I just say a company?

Valve.

Why?

Overrated. I despise the source engine. Feels clunky. Don't ask for more, I won't respond.

I've been told many times how good Fable and Black & White are, but whenever I play either, I just can't find anything special about them. They're not bad... just really mediocre, I feel.

If you think the campaign is subpar, then it seems to me that you don't think it is great, and therefore is not applicable here. I'm looking for games that you recognize as being excellent, paragons in there field, but you just can't bring yourself to enjoy.

WoW, just not my kind of game.
MoH, I don't like the whole, your an american special agent with a secret mission that no NPC is going to help you on in the middle of a battlefield, or when you have to solo most things when your not an agent.

Resistance, didn't do anything bad with the game but i just could never enjoy it. I certainly tried but maybe i've just been spoiled by better games like Halo and COD that have the same style but are just better.

Grand Theft Auto. The whole series. I understand they broke ground with the whole sandbox genre, and it's wonderfully cathartic to run people over and put some caps in some asses. But the whole experience just seems so....unfulfilled I guess would be the best word I can think of. After about 30 minutes in the game, whether I'm doing missions or just screwing around, I just get really sick of the experience.

Nonono...in all of those examples, you think the games and there design are flawed, overrated, or just not good. That now what i'm asking. I'm looking for games which you genuinely believe are great. If someone asked, you would tell them that this game is an excellent, top notch, well made, awesome game, but which, by some fluke, you just can't enjoy yourself whikle playing. I'm curious if people can put there personal tastes behind them, and try to appraise a game through a more objective set of criteria.

Well if i thinks its subpar, then that means i wouldn't like it therefore i wouldn't think its great. What's your definition of a great game? It sold 7 million copies and it's over 90 on metacritic and gamerankings. But i don't like it.

popular basically means great as the majority of people like it.
There is some truth to that, but not a lot of people will admit that. Also, someone could consider a cult classic, or an innovative indie hit to be fantastic, even if it was never popular.

Doesn't matter what my definition of a great game is, i'm concerned with what your definition is. I wanna see if people have an objective set of criteria for a good game, and recognize that they themselves are an anomaly. I think its a good mental exercise, and I myself have a hard time aknowledging quality in a game that I personally don't like, but have to admit that it is well designed.
