also too be honest, how can you think a game is great but not enjoy it? if you don't enjoy it it means it's a bad game or not to your liking making it not a great game. explain?
How about defining great as being a game which is designed in such a way as to cause a highly likely and strong, positive experience in playing, but which through some personal quirk, you just can't appreciate all the good points the game obviously has? Games which you have to admit you are an unusual outlier in regards to your enjoyment of the game. Basically, can people admit that there appraisal of other games has its own flaws?

Nonono...in all of those examples, you think the games and there design are flawed, overrated, or just not good. That now what i'm asking. I'm looking for games which you genuinely believe are great. If someone asked, you would tell them that this game is an excellent, top notch, well made, awesome game, but which, by some fluke, you just can't enjoy yourself whikle playing. I'm curious if people can put there personal tastes behind them, and try to appraise a game through a more objective set of criteria.
You piqued my interest.

I cannot play a Valve game. Any of them. Sure, the Source engine is deemed as good, and everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I cannot see it this way. Yes, I will admit that the Source engine has inspired a lot of games and many of them are hailed as some of the greatest of all time (Which I simply cannot agree with at all).

Here's the deal, you want me to pick a game that I hate but praise it as a revolutionary game that it top of the line. I cannot do this. It doesn't make sense to do this. Now, I can say that the premise of Little Big Planet is a wonderful idea. I cannot, however, say that Little Big Planet deserves praise as best game ever. I will never say that every game should copy its formula, because that would be idiotic. What you are asking me to do is against every fiber of what I believe. You want me to pick a game that I think is perfect, or near perfect, but despise utterly. If something is perfect in someone's mind, they cannot hate it. If they do, then it is not perfect.

You picked Street Fighter IV. But all you did was give a short review of it. You said that the game was very well made, but you didn't have fun playing it. Little Big Planet had pretty art, decent controls, and a unique idea, yet I hated playing it. It was not fun. So, I will say, don't play it. Simple as that.

Maybe I'm missing your point entirely, but, what I'm getting is that you want us to pick a game that we think is perfect but had no fun with. This cannot be done.

All Bioware games. I've never finished a single one and they consistently bore the crap out of me. Mass Effect in particular has the distinction of both recycling all their old gimmicks from Knights of the Old Republic and Baldur's Gate both and at the same time failing to be a good shooter or a good RPG.

Also, Kingdom Hearts 2. There is no Kingdom Hearts 2. The game Square released in 2005 is a sick, sick joke, and the real second game in the series is no doubt being released on 2012 for the PS3.

Metal Gear SOlid 4. It was amazing, but so linear! MGS4 would have been way better, I think, if it had a more Crysis-style approach. Namely: Here's your target, here's your map, here's a gun, figure it out. But I really hated the ending.

*SPOILER WARNING!!!*

Big Boss comes out and explains everything in about a half-hour. It's a long cutscene and he is supposedly dying from FOXDIE during it, but he would just not shut up! It was the first time I ever wanted a character to die so they would just close their gob.

I hate most 1st- and 3rd-person shooters (including those Medal of Duty: Warfare Call games) which just so happens to include many of the greatest games out there. I also dislike the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games but that's because I suck at them and am not willing to put in the effort to get good.

GTA 4. I could see all the time and effort that went into that game, and all the little details that would usually get overlooked in most games. But I just can't enjoy it, and I cannot explain why.

I totally understand what you mean.

Good faith effort to be Search Bar approved.

Ive noticed that people naturally express there bias. If they don't like a game, it's always a bad game, if they do, then either it's a big seller or under-appreciated. So I'd like to present a little subversion, to get people to think about critically analyzing games instead of just stating there personal preference: What games do you recognize are great, but just don't enjoy? Have you ever seen a game that you can list nothing but good things about, but you just...can't enjoy yourself?

Personally, I never really enjoyed Street Fighter 4. Wonderful game, great art style, impressive method of combining all the strengths of 2D and 3D graphics, solid, balanced and interesting game play that's accessible to new player without minimizing the skill of experienced player...and every time I played I felt like I was just pressing a button until the other guy fell down. It just never clicked for me, even though I traditionally like many varieties of fighting games.

Also, I never liked Metroid. And frankly, that one I REALLY can't explain. I recognize it as great intellectually, but for some reason, the rest of my brain doesn't.
Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. Good combat, interesting idea, fascinating story progression, and yet I hate it with every fiber of my being. Maybe I should revisit it, but always the mashing up of Final Fantasy characters with DISNEY characters strikes me as......blasphemous.

I am sure to get a lot of hate mail from this, at least from any older-generation gamers out there, but I really, truly hate Final Fantasy 6, and I fully recognize this as some sort of personal quirk. I've watched a complete play through of the game, and it is technically excellent, but I have not been able to play through the game without deciding it is not worth the time or effort to do so. I have a similar problem with Final Fantasy Tactics, but that was because I don't like turn based games. I am starting to like them more as I put more time into the Disgaea series, but I still feel like it's "work" to play them.

For the record, I love Final Fantasy 4, 5, and 7, but not 6.

Interesting topic, I think I see what you're trying to do here.

For me, it was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. I just didn't enjoy it. I played it on the PC and beat the campaign and enjoyed it immensely, but then the multiplayer was just not fun for me. I then received it as a gift for my 360. I tried to get into the campaign, but it just wasn't nearly as fun the second time through, and then figured I'd give the multiplayer a go, but again, I couldn't get into it. I think it's a good game, good concept, good controls, good lots of stuff, and it's considered an amazing game, but I just cannot have fun playing it...

None.
"Great" is opinionated. Therefore, there isn't a game that I don't like that I consider "great", I consider them "crap".

I have to give the rebuttal that it must be possible, seeing how people are...doing it.

See, I think you are very close to what I mean with Little Big Planet. You see it as a game with a large number of great and wonderful qualities, which makes up a well designed whole. You don't have to despise the game, it just has to be no fun for you. If someone told you they were looking for an innovative, family friendly platformer, I bet you would have to acknowledge that LBP is a great choice, even if you would never play it yourself. Perhaps the easiest answer to this question would be taste in genre. If I hated FPS games, I would not like Half Life 2. However, I might very well be able to see that it is designed well. Or perhaps a child's game could appear to be a wonderful child's game, but is obviously just not appealing to your demographic. Basically, it's okay to not like a game, but I also think its worthwhile to be able to think critically about a games qualities, and identify positive qualities, even if you happen to not like it. And given the periodic fights centered around beloved properties and developers (Valve, Halo, etc), I think it's a good thought experiment to prevent meaningless battles, and wncourage people to acknowledge strengths they might not traditionally appreciate.

Fable, Gears of War (1), and Dead Space.

The camera made me feel out of place and unimmersed.

Mass Effect, I know its excellent and that Bioware have made such a brilliant masterpiece, but I've tried so many times to get into it and failed.
