the game is not "Great" to you if you don't like it.
A feminine hygiene product could be great, but I definitely won't use any...

A game can definitely be great, even if you don't like it. It's completely feasible that a game does a great job at doing something which doesn't perk your interest, and focuses less on things which matters the most to you. It would be a mark of sophistication to realize that something you don't personally enjoy does something which others might enjoy. I didn't really enjoy, "Hamlet", but I am more then capable of acknowledging its brilliance. If you can't name a game like this, hey, no problem, I never said you had to. This thread is totally optional in participation. But surely it is logically sound that an individual can take into consideration the tastes of another person, which happens to be different from yours, and perhaps even admit that your position is unusual, and you can't exactly explain it. There's no shame in that, its just taste in entertainment. I know I have never had a problem with admitting I am unusual.

If I was attracted to fat people, and I saw the most beautiful skinny person in the world, I could say without shame that I understand that this person is beautiful, and appreciate the effort that took, without that fact threatening my position of not being attracted to them.

Most people here didn't actually READ the thread >_>
On topic: Bioshock. I recall enjoying it when I was actually playing it, but looking back on it I can't help but feel like it sucked. Though that's probably largely due to the whole ending where your character... changes, that kind of "fuck you"'d the whole concept and left it on that note. Not the slightest bit exited for the second one.

I can see why people would like Call of Duty 4 but ultimatley I preferred games on the calibre of Halo, science fiction and abscence of realism. So I never really got into Call of Duty as a series even though I can say that it functions perfectly and is remarkably well structured it just isn't for me.

The goodness of a game, and the beauty of a person are in the eyes of the beeholder.
it is simply an opinion.

Therefor if I do not like this game, I am not going to think it "great"

The Tekken series (and indeed, any fighting series) I recognise as great. They allowed people to beat the seven colours of snot out of people on TV screens... but they're just not all that enjoyable as a longstanding game. I think fighting games have had their time and some new innovation is needed.

Personally I wasnt feeling "mass effect".
There was way too much talking and not enough combat.
I am an rpg fan, but even this amount of dialogue was ridiculous.
I did however like the story, it just needed to be toned down a bit. And the combat was fun, it was just overshadowed by the story.

Good faith effort to be Search Bar approved.

Ive noticed that people naturally express there bias. If they don't like a game, it's always a bad game, if they do, then either it's a big seller or under-appreciated. So I'd like to present a little subversion, to get people to think about critically analyzing games instead of just stating there personal preference: What games do you recognize are great, but just don't enjoy? Have you ever seen a game that you can list nothing but good things about, but you just...can't enjoy yourself?

Personally, I never really enjoyed Street Fighter 4. Wonderful game, great art style, impressive method of combining all the strengths of 2D and 3D graphics, solid, balanced and interesting game play that's accessible to new player without minimizing the skill of experienced player...and every time I played I felt like I was just pressing a button until the other guy fell down. It just never clicked for me, even though I traditionally like many varieties of fighting games.

Also, I never liked Metroid. And frankly, that one I REALLY can't explain. I recognize it as great intellectually, but for some reason, the rest of my brain doesn't.
Call of duty: Modern Warfare 2. The nukes are just bullshit, and there are guns that just completely break the game. The whole game (apart from single player is bullshit).
Call of duty 4 online was alot more balanced, alot more fun, had alot less cheap tactics that people could exploit, and in my opinion crapped all over Modern Warfare in just about any way I can think of. The graphics are alot better than 4m but in my opinion, that's the only improvement. Also call of duty 4 never had that annoying red goop on screen (it looks NOTHING like blood)
Also, i played tekken 6 the other day, and I can safely say I'm not buying that game. Tekken has easily had it's day and the decision for Namco to just give you all the characters unlocked straight away really cemented the nail in the coffin for me.

Or it could be to do with the fact that it's just system shock II copypasted, but without any penalty for death or fear of running out of specifically needed ammo?

I don't like the Call of Duty games (no real reason for that, as I like shooters just fine, just don't like Call of Duty)

There's a second Brawl? I though it was the one of the N64, Melee and brawl.

Although, I didn't liked Brawl...

Nonono...in all of those examples, you think the games and there design are flawed, overrated, or just not good. That now what i'm asking. I'm looking for games which you genuinely believe are great. If someone asked, you would tell them that this game is an excellent, top notch, well made, awesome game, but which, by some fluke, you just can't enjoy yourself whikle playing. I'm curious if people can put there personal tastes behind them, and try to appraise a game through a more objective set of criteria.
You piqued my interest.

I cannot play a Valve game. Any of them. Sure, the Source engine is deemed as good, and everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I cannot see it this way. Yes, I will admit that the Source engine has inspired a lot of games and many of them are hailed as some of the greatest of all time (Which I simply cannot agree with at all).

Here's the deal, you want me to pick a game that I hate but praise it as a revolutionary game that it top of the line. I cannot do this. It doesn't make sense to do this. Now, I can say that the premise of Little Big Planet is a wonderful idea. I cannot, however, say that Little Big Planet deserves praise as best game ever. I will never say that every game should copy its formula, because that would be idiotic. What you are asking me to do is against every fiber of what I believe. You want me to pick a game that I think is perfect, or near perfect, but despise utterly. If something is perfect in someone's mind, they cannot hate it. If they do, then it is not perfect.

You picked Street Fighter IV. But all you did was give a short review of it. You said that the game was very well made, but you didn't have fun playing it. Little Big Planet had pretty art, decent controls, and a unique idea, yet I hated playing it. It was not fun. So, I will say, don't play it. Simple as that.

Maybe I'm missing your point entirely, but, what I'm getting is that you want us to pick a game that we think is perfect but had no fun with. This cannot be done.
I wish the world had more people like you in it.

Chrono Trigger. I KNOW people love "Trigger" to death, but it just never clicked with me. Good game (the story in particular was rather remarkable) just not BEAT EVAR or anything. I also have to agree with Monkeyman8. I got the Wii and picked up Brawl, but I was rather disappointed.

Final Fantasy 7
I was a big fan of Japanese RPGs and mostly Final Fantasy until I played this one. For some reason, I just lost interest really really fast. I know a lot of people call it one of the best games of all time and it has a well-done story, but I just couldn't get into it. It could have been the fact that I had just finished FF10 when I got a hold of 7 and the graphics just hurt my eyes.
