"Great" games that failed to blow you away

I had to go look for this thread because a game I only played just recently has well and truly earned its place on this thread- Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. For years considered THE best of the old-school linear platformer Castlevanias, the one which caused the most people to howl "WHY NO EXPORT FOR US?" and the one the importers and emulators held up and laughed in triumph over. I just got it on Virtual Console recently and started playing with great anticipation. I'd wanted to play it ever since I played the opening stage of Symphony of the Night, where Richter was, if anything, more fun to control than Alucard. So you can imagine my excitement at finally getting to use him in a whole game designed around him.

What the hell is this crap?

Richter Belmont, supposedly one of the quintessential Castlevania badasses, can't run, can't slide, can't double-jump, can't whip in any direction except straight forward and his backflip maneuver is so limited as to be virtually useless. Hell, he can't even control his jumps in midair properly! I found the game almost unplayable until I unlocked Maria, who -get this- can double jump, control herself in midair, slide, roll backwards and forwards and gets a FAR more effective attack (she throws DOVES at enemies!) Playing as Maria the game actually becomes bearable, but a number of lousy design choices bring it down again. Both Richter and Maria have far too little health for a game where there is so much shit flying at you at once (Maria has lower defence than Richter, but Richter can't dodge attacks because he's a loser so he NEEDS the extra defence), healing items are so rare as to be almost nonexistant and I sincerely hope that whichever nitwit decided that mercy invincibility should be only about as long as damage recovery time was taken out the back and beaten with a croquet mallet. The number of times a zombie has spawned under my jump, causing me to be knocked flying back only for it to hit me again when it walks into me before I can recover...

OK, the game is technically accomplished- the graphics look pretty good, the movies are great, the sound is EXCELLENT and the level designs are quite impressive with branching paths ane everything. But I can't get over how badly it PLAYS. Super Castlevania IV was better than this!

Bioshock

It opens with a strong, horror settings in which I was having a lot of fun, then it turns into an action game...I was SO disappointed after everyone I know says it's such a super game...

The orange box, a bunch of games I had no fun in.

Actually I got the ps3 version
I tend to forget that it was released for the PS3 (I've never played one so I don't pay much attention to it). But yes, what applies to the Xbox 360 version of the Orange Box also applies to the PS3 version.
If you want to play these games they way they were meant to be played, get the PC version. The console versions (mainly talking about TF2 here) aren't balanced quite right for console. With a mouse, your turn speed is limited only by how fast you can move your mouse, so it's easy to turn around and get that spy behind you. With the console versions, it's hella hard since there is a definite limit to your turn speed.

Well, I hate to be totally unoriginal, but Halo 3 and Modern Warfare 2. Both were described to me as 'the bestest game evar', and while both games have a lot going for them, they're definitely not that! Not even close!

Bioshock. I knew too much about it, I have a ps3 so i didn't know I would be able to play it. And my freind told me what the biggest twist in the game is, so I wasn't that impressed.

I liked God of War 3, but as my first entry to the series and with all the hype, I thought it would be a little better... I deff think it's over-hyped. But it's still a good game.

Killzone 2 is touted as being so great, but I didn't even get through the single player I just didn't much like it.

Final Fantasy, the series as a whole. Ok I've not played every game, but from the first one I played to FF13, it's always been a case of many people talking about how amazing it is, and I decide I should give it another chance, and I am always disappointed. But because every game is different, it's hard to say I should give it up completely.

Fable 2 was fun but a big let down and I think most of you know why.

After the recent fuss being made over Battlefield Bad Company 2, I traded in another disappointment: Aliens Versus Predator and was not disappointed, but underwhelmed. I think I'm just so used to the frantic pace of Modern Warfare 2, and the physics on Battlefield seem very sluggish.

Mass Effect was huge let down as I love Bioware (and really love Dragon Age). The combat (oh dear the combat), leveling, world (vehicle area...ugh) and characters, it felt like another company making a bad rip off of Bioware game. I never thought Bioware would make a bad game, but even they are human. I have zero interest in playing 2 (and I guess 3). Shame as it could have been something special.

Oblivion

I put a total of 132 hours into Fallout 3 yet I can't get more than 5 hours into Oblivion before I go "okay, not feeling this one"

Hmm, let's see.

CoD:MW / MW2
FFVII / FFX - XII (Haven't played XIII yet, from what I've heard the battle system sounds interesting. (FFVII was good, but it didn't "blow me away".))
Halo, all of them. (They were boring as hell)
Mass Effect (Also boring as hell)

Fallout 3 (Dull)
Dragonage: Origins (Slow)
Star Trek Online (Terrible)

They are just not as good as other games out there. I prefered Oblivion to Fallout even with it's much better voice overs.

MW2, but when you put so much hope into the game being epic and with so much hype around it, it was always gonna fail (In terms of being liked). The online could have redeemed it, but there is to many broken issues that make it unplayable.

I agree with Dragon Age Origins, I just don't get why it is so popular.

And I just remembered, I found Final Fantasy 7 to be unbelievably boring.
This. It's all killing giant caterpillars and wasps to level up. And then there are the summoning sequences, which take an hour and a half to finish up *every time you use them!*
