The situation is fuzzy now, but back when I played Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, part of my playthrough consisted of gathering up all the candelabras. I remember being in some town, having reached a save point .. but then the moment I came out of the save room, I was dragged down to Hell (or .. something) to fight one of the skeleton enemies. I can't remember which one it was, but there was a horse. It was either red with a bunch of eyes on its body, or white or .. something. Either way, it was an extremely tough battle, and I couldn't leave to gather/fuse new/better demons or anything. So that was tough, and quite unexpected.

(It might've been reversed. I was either trapped in a save room, or I couldn't get to the save room before the forced boss fight, and each time it was a long run through a dungeon to get to that point. I really can't remember the exact details. I just remember the fight itself .. almost.)

First time I confronted them, I had such a "WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU--" moment, especially with how easy they killed me. They're still challenging even when at max level. If you could take them out, you were set for life!
At least with the Emerald Weapon you see him swimming around and can avoid him until you're ready. Ruby on the other hand, screw that rat bastard.

First time you're playing through the game you just see this little red thing out in the desert. "Huh, what the heck is that? Kinda looks like some dude in a red cloak wandering around in the desert. I'm just gonna go down and see if I can get a closer loo---HOLY CRAP IT'S A FRICKIN' WEAPON FIGHT!" And then he proceeds to beat the ever-living crap out of you.

To-date I've never beaten Ruby for the free Golden Chocobo, always had to breed my own. I can kick Emerald's ass, though. :p

First time playing Resident Evil 4.
"Well, this game doesn't seem to bother with tutorials much, I'm glad I was able to learn enough so that I could survive. At least the enemies aren't too crazy ye- WHY DOES THAT ONE HAVE A CHAINSAW?!"

Plying Spore just yesterday.

After playing for 5 hours I reached the space exploration stage. I zoomed out as far as I could go and realised that in this section of the game I could explore the entire Milky Way.

I had trouble with the Elite 4, so I doubted I could take her on, but...I never lost so badly in my life...that freaking Garchomp...
Lucky. You had forewarning.

*flashback to Pokemon Black*

"Well, here I am in Undella Town! Looks rather pretty here. Time to start talking to people...oh, hi! Your name is Cynthia, huh? Odd, you have a <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1Egwloq6Lk>strangely threatening musical motif, are you an important character? Do I want to duel? Well, sure, my team's average about level 55, I should be able to win. Bring it on!"

*gets entire team sweeped by Spiritomb*

"...mommy. " ;_;
Oh man, that literally happened to me when I first played Black. I hadn't played any of the gen 4 games yet, so I had no idea she was a some freaking champion from another region. My team was in the mid 60s I believe, I beat her Spiritomb, only to have her Garchomp take out the rest of my team. That was pretty painful, but at least her battle theme was awesome enough as she pummeled me several times.

Any encounter with more than four people/infected in The Last Of Us.
It really is one of those games where you go "Oh yeah, I'm only one guy."

Not when I first played, she was going to be tough, but she absolutely curb stomped me in the most humiliating way possible.

So she shows up in a random house in Black?

I did manage to beat her on my second try. My team[footnote]Serperior, Liepard, Boldore, Simipour, Zebstrika, and Gothitelle. Screw the metagame.[/footnote] was more tricksy than strong, so it was pretty much "Leech Seed and Stall" every time. Luckily, the fight is a ways in after the "main" game, so I had plenty of money for items.

Yes, I fight like a bastard when I'm 20 levels underleveled.

Monster Hunter. Me and my brother went to fight the Akantor with weapons that wouldn't impress a Tigrex. After a few minutes of shitting our pants, we actually beat him... with less than a minute to spare.

Every single boss in Demon's Souls the first time I played through it. Flamelurker was the worst but, I was totally not ready for that fight.

Hmm...attempting Terramorphous with a level 35-ish Gunzerker in Borderlands 2 springs to mind. Walk in thinking it can't be that bad, and dump a couple mags from my Hammer Buster into its face...and its health bar doesn't even move. Then I get flattened in one hit by a tentacle. Certain sections of Bioshock Infinite on 1999 Mode got a little frantic too, especially the final sequence.

Ace Combat 6 had a mission where you're told you'll be flying low up through a valley to knock out an enemy convoy while staying off radar, so I picked a ground-attack bird for it, I think it was the F-117 or A-10. You hit several checkpoints on the way up and nail the convoy no problem...and then your missile alert starts buzzing. So you look down at your radar, and you've got incoming enemy aircraft. Not just one or two, mind, but what would appear to be all the enemy fighters. From there, it just sorta goes like this [http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l70epzVI1p1qa1id2o1_500.jpg], because the ground attack planes handle like bricks.

FFT for the PS.

I'm actually playing through it again for the first time in years and have made it laughably easy due to a RIDICULOUS amount of grinding at the beginning of the game...seriously, I had 2 ninjas with ignore height before I got to the 5th story battle, and I had 2 master calculators before I completed the first chapter (of four) of the game.

But we're not here to talk about being OVERprepared, we're here to talk about being underprepared. At the end of Chapter 3, you've gotta do a series of 3 back-to-back battles in a lovely little place called Riovanes Castle. The first battle is pretty standard: you're at the gates and have to kill a couple knights, some archers, I think there's a monk in there, and a black mage or two. Pretty tough, but not too much of a headache. Then comes Mr. Wiegraf to challenge your main character to a 1v1 battle.

Here's a bit of info about Wiegraf. He's powerful ranged attacks that can kill you in one shot and if they don't they can inflict Stop upon you, meaning he gets a few turns to kill you at his leisure. The only way to prevent this would be to break his sword, but he's got the Maintenance ability which means you can't break his sword. The only other option is to try and steal his sword...and good luck with that. If you fail you're dead.

So that leaves you with having to kill him before he kills you. Well your best shot is to go straight offense with two swords and try to do enough damage to him to knock him down. Well as it happens he's got a kick ass shield that makes it nigh-impossible to hit him from the front and pretty hard to hit him from the sides...add to it his accessory which increases his side defense and your only left with trying to attack him from behind...the problem is that since he's got strong ranged attacks, he doesn't feel too keen on the idea of letting you get around behind him.
Oh...screw that fight. Screw that fight three ways to Sunday and back. I remember playing that battle when I was a kid. My brother and I somehow managed to beat it, but we don't remember how. YEARS later, I replayed it, trying to see if I could understand the story better since I am now in my twenties. Got to that fight again and started swearing like a sailor. Forty-five minutes, and I still kept losing. So I cheated. Gave my character Guts, Jump, a lance, and Auto-potion. Made sure I had over a hundred X-potions. Ran away from him for thirty minutes, just using Guts to up my stats and if he hit me, I healed automatically. When I finally used jump, I tore him apart. One hit. Her transforms and the next battle starts. My hero goes first--because Guts has put his speed through the roof--and I use Jump again. No one else gets to go. He jumps up, comes down immediately (again, speed was insane) and kills him in one hit. Take THAT cheating game!

Anyway, one of mine is the first time you have to fight a Big Daddy in BioShock. Atlas tells you that "You're ready for this, boyo," but oh Lord, you most certainly are not. That thing ripped me apart numerous times. I ended up sprinting past it, running back into the dentist office, hiding in a vent, and using fire on an oil spill again and again until the thing finally burned to death. To this day I still can't take that thing on toe to toe the first time.

ANY boss fight in Dark Souls, but that's the point of the game I suppose.

Ninja Gaiden. The first time you fight Rachel's sister. Alma I believe her name was.

The first time you fight Murai in Ninja Gaiden. "Oh, this is the first boss fight? Well it should be easy since it's still--WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?! NO, WAIT! HOW DID HE--?! MY FACE!"

Omega Weapon in Final Fantasy VIII. "Okay, I've got this. He's supposed to be hard, but I've been able to beat Ultimate Weapon and everything else so far with ease. This should be (Terra Break)...How the hell am I supposed to survive an attack that deals 9,999 with each hit?" I hadn't really figured out the Junction system yet.

The final mission of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. I had lost 6 troops in the whole game in ironman mode (not the easiest choice on my first play through), and had yet to fail a mission. Then the last mission came around. I had taken a few wounds but nothing major up to the point where you fact 2 Sectopod. I was confident because I had 3 heavies along who where all trained to do extra damage to robot units also all of my soldiers were Colonel's. Then my guys kept missing shots while the Sectopod killed 4 of my 6 troopers. Bad day.

In short: if you go against him and you're not overleveled for the fight, you're going to lose. Period. And if you've been working off of one save file and saved your game after the first battle at the gates of Riovanes, then that means you're essentially stuck...meaning you have to start the entire frickin' game all over.

Assuming you do manage to knock him down, the rest of your party shows up as he turns into a massive spell-casting demon with powerful summon spells that can wipe out your entire party very quickly. You'd think spreading out would be a good idea but due to the layout of the battlefield, you're pretty much forced to remain clumped together. Again, unless you're overleveled for the battle, you'd completely boned.

Assuming you do manage to beat him, you go to the 3rd and final battle on the rooftop. The good news is that there's only three opponents, the better news is that all you have to do is knock one of them down to being "wounded" and they all retreat. The bad news? They're all incredibly fast (so they usually get to go before you), you lose the match if they kill an NPC that you don't have control over (and they can do so in one shot on their first turn), and unless you have someone with Ignore Height/Teleport and a very strong attack, you're not going to even be able to make it to the enemies in time.

In short: Riovanes Castle fucking sucks. It's easily the hardest part in the entire frickin' game and will basically do this to you if you're not prepared:
In case the metaphor wasn't clear: Riovanes is the clown.
For that matter, Adam Sandler represents the average player's response to Riovanes. :p
Pretty sure everyone knew what you were going to say as soon as you said FFT.

Riovanes would be fine without the stuck save nonsense. Once you're in, you're in. I came here to post about having to restart the game after Inside of Riovanes was unwinnable and I couldn't get out to level. Stagger-saving in tactical games is now a religion to me. The further rub-in is that you get Orlandu soon after and the game becomes a joke from a difficulty standpoint. Pretty sure you could fall asleep with the controller in your hand and wake up to find Orlandu had won the fight for you.

Was just talking about the Riovanes nonsense with some friends a few days ago by coincidence.

Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2. Then came the Sigma editions...I pretty much just said "eff that."

Multiple moments on Castelvania: Lords of Shadow.

My most comical "aw hell no" moment was the final Raiden arc in the recent MK game. I pretty much handed the controller to my friend.

Dark Souls. It was either when I started running into pendulums into Sen's Fortress or the narrow ramp with two Silver Knight archers in Anor Londo. Both were pretty bad on me my first time through.

Yesterday actually. Me and a friend decided to do some of the dlc quests. First we fought a rust durumboros. We broke off its tailcase which was the size of a mountain on its own.

After beating that we decided to take down a dlc ivory lagiacrus that could easily kill us in two hits. Fuck that thing. We died when we had 10 minutes left.
