I respect people who dedicate their time to improving other's lives, whoever they are and regardless of what they are or aren't getting paid. Particularly my teachers, because some of them are phenomenally awesome and manage to make learning fun. Like best-memories-of-my-life fun.

And my mum, because not only is she one of my best friends, but she's also generally awesome, incredibly mature about dealing with things (and between me and my brother she has dealt with a LOT), and going to college to be a nurse while working and taking care of my brother (who has Asberger's Syndrome and is royally difficult to get along with) all by herself. And she deals with all the shit of daily life with incredibly good grace.

Also one of my best friend's families (himself included), because they're the most inconceivably and unconditionally nice people I have ever met in my life.

First on my list are soldiers of any Nation. Whether they be American, British, Russian I respect these people almost more than any other profession. Number two would be EMTs, Police and Firefighters. They risk their lives everyday to protect us. Third would be teachers and the average American worker who has to rely on physical labor jobs to get by.

Military. Be it Army Navy, or Air Force.
You may wonder why the Marines aren't on the list. That's because they're just part of the Navy.
Yes we rub their face in it all the time.
If you really want to tweak a Marine's nose, tell him G-d created Marines so sailors would have someone to dance with. (Although I guess that works better for soldiers...) For Marines' part, they say they love the Navy. Every time there's a fight, you guys give them a ride to it.

For me, the military, especially line doggies. I don't think I've got it in me to charge across a bare beach into cannon and machine gun fire.

And firefighters. There are a number of people for whom I would run into a burning building, but strangers? If I can't hear them and probably see them, it ain't happening. And probably not even then.

EDIT: And Sandra Bullock. When she wants to support a charity, she just gives money and doesn't make a big deal about it. Most celebrities just donate time, demand a lot of perks, and then write off the donated time.

To say the least, I respect anyone who goes out of their own way to help somebody else.

...unless they're a dick.
Like Bono?
HA! Poor Bono. I think I would have more respect for Bono if he didn't have to make a big deal out of everything he does. Look at me! I am giving poor people money! Bask in my humble charity!

Gotta give it up for anyone who truly wants to help others. I feel bad for police officers. They get a bad rap b/c of a couple bad apples and needing to cut people off from having too much fun. Nobody seems to like the police, but if you ever need help, I bet 911 for the police is the first number you dial (USA patrons that is).

No, I never did for myself. Only when I was robbed, and even then, they didn't fucking DO ANYTHING! Cops don't prevent crime, they investigate it, and three quarters of the time they don't do even that... But Yes, I respect Fire Fighters above everyone but Coast Guardsmen. Coasties are the only people I know that will jump into 30 foot seas to save a girl on a foundering yacht... And the only thing as close to as bad ass as jumping into thirty foot seas from a perfectly good helicopter or boat is running into a burning building for the same reason. Hell, Even Fire Fighters are smart enough to run away from Hurricanes. Nope, we charge head first into that storm and hope our boat still floats when we get through it. God Bless all of the men and women who are still serving, I wish I could go back...
Actually most cops only investigate crime if they stop it for speeding, but they all have to be ready to confront armed criminals, got to give them that. Our last sheriff had to step down to stand trial for bribery, cocaine trafficking, money laundering, providing guns to felons, extortion, and I forget what all. But most are good, honest people, at least that I've known.

Why can't you go back to the Coast Guard? They're heavily deployed to and around Iraq (or were anyway), so I'd have thought they'd be recruiting. And people willing to leap into 30 foot seas can't be hanging around on every street corner. Personally I'd be on the bullhorn yelling "Hey Dumbass, grab this rope and hang on for the next 20 miles."
