Frank Sinatra dammit.

And if you try to say "But he wasn't part of a band", then I shall retort with "What do you call Ocean's Eleven then!?". It's not a music band, but it is a band with Frank Sinatra. That's why he wins!
There's also the Frank Sinatra Jazz Orchestra.

That too, but it isn't as badass. At least not in my opinion.

True.
Ocean's Eleven is almost as cool of a name as the Miles Davis Sextet.

Radiohead, I suppose. That's personal preference.
Though Radiohead are my favourite band ever ever EVER, i'm not sure that i'd put them as best band of the 20th century, because i think that its not until the 21st century where they really cement themselves as an amazing band...

Beatles, Pink Floyd, U2 and Rolling Stones.

Criteria: I can listen to the ENTIRE ALBUM without skipping one song. Never really made a "bad" song.

Runner ups
(and a record breaker in his own right) Weird Al Yankovic
THe Cure (one of the BEST guitar players out there)
Michael Jackson (not really a BAND, per se...but he did started in theJackson 5)
Enya (as with Jackson, she started in Clannad...personal preferance)

Metallica, maaaaate.
Funny, usually bands selling out isn't considered a good thing.

I would say... Black Sabbath, seeing as they, you know, basically pioneered an entire genre... With help from Led Zeppelin, although they helped the hard rock movement more than the metal movement.
the good parts of Metallica's career completely outweigh the selling out, in my opinion.

Assemblage 23. I am so glad that Tom Shear's early stuff began in the late 80's so I can count them.

Get over yourself. No threads accomplish anything.

My money's on the Vienna Philharmonic. For starters, they've been around for the entire twentieth century (though they took a powder during those two World Wars). Beyond that, they play better music than the prolefeed pop bands.

True. It was post Kid A that things started to get really good. Culminated in Hail to the Thief, for me at least.
