I understand why tho, the Discworld just isn't as simple, as black and white, as 'good guy/bad guy' as the Harry Potter series, and Rowling's work is just much more filmable and accessible to huge audiences. I don't deny her the success, tho I would suggest they're rather milking the last few drops by splitting the next movie into two parts.
/agreed. Harry Potter was good, but I would say it's WAY overdone now with 8 movies slated, as well as how many other HP related things sold?

I've seen Pratchett's Discworld up here and I would agree wholeheartedly that it is a phenomenal world of books, though trying to break it down into "series" I enjoyed the "Night Guard" books with Nobby, Colon, Carrot and that whole crew at the lead. Also, anything to do with Death or Susan as protags were wonderful.

The Wheel of Time series is amazing. Jordan made an expansive world to himself which rivals Tolkein's in my mind. I'm just curious now how books 13 and 14 will turn out since it won't actually be Jordan, may he rest in peace, writing them.

Other noteworthy books/series' I've seen listed, and others I didn't:
Shannara series' (there are technically multiple) by Terry Brooks
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman (as stated in the topic post)
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (reiterated many times)
Feed by M.T. Anderson

You know, I really think the next time I'm looking for a new book, I'll just have to check the Escapist forums, because I've seen quite a few "best books/series'" topics popping up lately...

The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay is my favorite fantasy series ever. He somehow manages to combine every single Lord of the Rings cliche in existence into an amazing original story.

My favorite book is probably A Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole. You will not find a funnier book or a more hilarious protagonist anywhere.

Sherlock Holmes. And Discworld, obviously, but people have already posted their love for Terry Pratchett a few times ITT.

OH, and *points at avatar* though I can't be sure whether all of Edgar Allan Poe's stories shoved in one book actually qualifies or not.

My personal favorites (Nearly all of which have been mentioned before in this thread) are:
Raymond Feist's Magician Series
Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials Trilogy
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Series, Douglas Adams

And one that I haven't seen yet is Robert Asprin's Myth Adventures. The series has a unique comic character and some messages that really speak to you. I can't say any one character from the series is my favorite, but as a whole the M.Y.T.H. company makes a beautiful ensemble.

Also from the bit of Skulduggery Pleasant that I've read it seems possible of making it onto this list, but I haven't actually gotten into the series much. We'll see how it shapes up.

H2G2 and Discworld are good, but...

Not one mention of Stephen King - The Dark Tower?

It's really really really good.

Oops! Sorry I hadn't seen any in recent months so I thought it was time. My bad.

I agree that the "Copper" set were the best of his work closely followed by the witches

Vatta's War, Serrano Legacy and Paksennarion Trilogy - Elizabeth Moon
The Miles Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold
Eragon Series - Christopher Paolini
The Belgariad, Belgarath the Sorcerer, Polgara the Sorceress - David Eddings
Earth's Children series (Clan of the Cave Bear etc) - Jean M Auel

Not in order. Just what came to mind. Best? Either the Vorkosigan books or the Earth's Children books.

Put another one down for Dan Abnett. He can be read even if you aren't familiar with Warhammer 40k.

I'll also throw in The Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell, a great military scifi series.

But best book? Catch-22, no exceptions. Nothing beats a classic.

Ive always wanted to try Song of Ice and Fire but can never find the books anywhere.

My favourite book series however is the Demonata Series by Darren Shan. Absolutely brilliant story with loveable characters and plenty of moments where you just dont want to stop reading.

Discworld is a great series, but the best in my opinion is actually the Young Wizards series.

The concept is this: Magic exists, but it's not waving a little wand around that for some reason produces results. Instead, magic is a phenomona grounded entirely in science, using complex algorithms and even a new language that almost never uses synonyms. There's a lot more to it than that, but I'd rather you read the books to find out. They are seriously some of the best books I've seen that mix Sci-Fi with Fantasy. I highly recommend them.

Well I really liked the Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks, but....
of ALL time? Yeah that would be Hitchhiker's Guide series.
I personally thought he should have worte that book about the time when the Kakari were first given out, surely that would have been a truely great series.
Maybe he will, he might write a prequel series, you never know.

Is he still writing them? I've read (and own) up to Deaths Shadow. How many others are there?

Also they are so much better than his Vampire series. They seem a bit more mature.
