It depends on what you mean by "Greatest". If we're going by level of influence, the answer is Halo, hands down. It single-handedly revolutionized shooters and just about all subsequent games have taken at least one aspect from it.

If we're talking which ones were most enjoyed/highest quality, I'd say either Half-Life 2 or TimeSplitters 2. HL2 is just awesome, even today, and I spent hours upon hours upon hours playing TimeSplitters 2 with my friends.
Halo did revolutionize the shooter industry but so did Starsiege Tribes [the bloody first one]. It all depends on how far back we go and towards what variables do they react towards.

Soldier of Fortune 2, perhaps the greatest FPS of it's time. It was an absolute gorefest with a simple storyline that kept you massacring waves and waves of enemies and feeling damn good about it too.

Sometimes being the good guy is decent. That being said, I do miss games like SF2 when they actually tried to be abusively disturbing without being comical, but at the same time, not horror.
The original SoF certainly brought in some interesting ideas, I remember there being controversy that probably garnered a lot of sales, but I'm not sure in the long term it stands out.

Pretty mediocre game, the controls just suck.

Hard to argue with this, it's taken ages for another game to come along and do what Deus Ex did, and in some ways it's still unique.

DOOM.

Any other answer pales in comparison to the greatness of DOOM when it came out.
Well yes, but it's an easy answer as there wasn't anything else competing with it at the time.

TimeSplitters 3 = Best FPS of last gen.

System Shock 2 = First FPS to give me scares beyond the 'SOMETHING JUMPS OUT' crap.
Oddly, while SS2 was first person, I never considered it much of a shooter.

I'd go with either Deus Ex or Unreal Tournament.

I think you should give S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow Of Chernobyl a try I found it to be one of the scariest FPS' I've ever played...

Modern Warfare 2 wasn't all that innovative to be honest. It was a decent game but it wasn't anything new. The storyline was alright but it wasn't all that 'new'.

Still a good game and probably is the best of its time in the case of sales and playerbase, although that being said I could easily mark any of the Half-Life based games.

Yes. All three STALKER games i would reccomend to anyone looking for an FPS that is a little different. They are some of the most innovative and uncompromising games to come out in the last decade and whilst they are not for everyone their unique blend of segmented open-world, item based character improvement, solid gunplay, well realised world and mixing of grounded realism and out there Sci-Fi really make the games stand above the pack.

In terms of the question; Deus Ex still feels innovative today. There has never been a better blending of RPG and FPS that allows so many options.
wow man... it's like your reading my mind...

Yes, I should.

The new S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a graphical beauty on a environment scale.
Have you tried the 2009 complete mod for Shadow Of Chernobyl? now that's what I call beautiful it completely overhauls the engine and it looks even better than Call Of Pripyat...
I didn't but I looked over the development of it. Beautiful gameplay, but now when we're getting into millions of polys per frame, we're suddenly noticing gameplay issues.

Stalker is pretty damn awesome.

But for that Doom-style, over the top FPS charm, I think Prey has it. This is fucked up! is the most memorable line of the game.

I remember Goldeneye, that was another of those childhood games I was more than willing to waste my days on.

Agreed, it wasn't a big game influentially, however I loved it as a game. That's why I found it great :)

Easy there white chocolate; you have an issue with the controls? Left stick strafe, right stick aim? I know not one of the three Timesplitters is a perfect rounded game (and I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of Deus Ex) but it has all the elements of silly violence-based joy! I'm frying Calimari with a plasma rifle in the Wild West! I'm living the dreaaaaam!

I've gotta say, I have not seen a really good FPS since "Perfect Dark." Had fun with "Borderlands" recently, but the game sucks. It's just fun because they included split screen, and I have real friends, not facebook friends.

Its hard to say which is the best ever. But one i would definately put in the mix is Half-Life and to a less extent Half Life 2.

Both games just give an aura of Quality when your playing them. The story is great, the levels well thought out and innovative. The guns feel weighty and all useful, the mechanics are great within the game.

But also its more of a thinking persons shooter, as well as the great action there are parts when you have to stop and think about something without being led by the hand like some current shooters.

That's what they call INTERNET sarcasm.

I really loved goldeneye. I know that PC FPS games of the time were infinitely better, but I have many fond memories of my first splitscreen shooting experience.

That was the reason I said it.

As for the controls of TimeSplitters sucking, that's all opinion. I have no trouble going from the mouse and keyboard of UT2004 and the Dual Shock 3 of Modern Warfare 2, to the controls of TimeSplitters 2 and 3.

SO TRUE. I loved those!

In all seriousness though

My favorite FPS is split into many different categories, since you can't really group it all together.

Favorite Multiplayer: Halo 3, I spent a lot of time in that game, I just love the battles, not long like health based shooters like quake and UT, but longer than "I see you first" battles of games like call of duty. BR is my hero.

Favorite casual: Doom 3, after I beat it once, I just play nightmare from time to time, I just love bunny hoping around the levels and killing enemies while they don't stand a chance, makes me feel awesome.

Favorite Single Player: Half life series, half life 1 and the expansions were early for my time, so I didn't really like the narrative and such since it wasn't really there due to limitations, but HL2 and its expansions were just mind blowing, I'd never seen a physics engine like havoc before, and the gravity gun was just way too awesome, everything about it was awesome, from catch with DOG to the mysterious encounters with the G-Man.

Favorite Coop: Borderlands, for easy reasons. It was just plain fun.

Favorite Game due to community: TF2 PC, the stuff that goes on in the game is just awesome, all the new weapons and hats were something that just made an awesome game cooler, some of it contributed by the amazing community, all of the memes, videos and jokes that have come from TF2 are just mind blowing. I don't think there will ever be a community so rich with awesome in a long time.
