This was and still is a pretty big holy sh** opening.
This opening is one giant balls to the wall no holds barred glory shot of fan service and awesome.
Once again one holy sh** take your breath away...tragic opening. Took me forever to accept that she was gone.
And last but certainly not least. At least for me. Is the Jersey Devil intro.
I looove the animation in this.

None of these are the intro to Red Dead Redemption. It's really beyond subjective, but I feel RDR's intro really personifies the game you're about to play, and introduces the setting like no other game ever has

The newest Alone in the Dark had a really cool opening sequence. It all went wrong after that though.

We have a winner here I think, but something that I realised recently concerning the very first scene that annoyed me...

In ME3, why the hell doesn't Miranda (assuming she's still alive) just tell you where Cerberus headquarters is when she's been there?! Seriously, she's stood in that very room in Cronos Station with The Illusive Man, but at no point in all you interactions with her after she's left Cerberus, who have now put a price on her head, does it occur to her to tell you where their mother-fucking base of operations is? Instead, you have to jump through a whole series of hoops, including her planting a tracer on Kai Leng so he'll lead you back to their base. Again, I have to ask why all that is necessary when she already knows where it is and could have just effing told you?! So I guess you could say everything Cerberus gets up to for the whole second half of the game is her fault. Fuck that *****!
According to the books, the Illusive Man relocates his headquarters every time someone leaves. But, since not everyone read the book, I'm assuming it got relocated to somewhere with a star that looks identical, to both save and cause confusion. Especially when Kai Leng constantly jumps on and off it

OT: So many to choose from. Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy 13 (purely for the eye candy), Fate/Stay Night (despite it being 2 hours long) and Wrath of the Lich King are all ones I love, but Assassin's Creed 2 wins for me. Dat Music.

Like many other people here, I am saying Mass Effect 2.

Bioshock's opening was also quite good.

This one still gets me to this day:

It sets the mood and tone while giving a sense of scale and foreboding. I loved it. Still do.

I have that monologue memorized. The music is also cool, and it carefully sets up something that only makes real sense two games later.

It's simple, and grips you into playing because seriously, what was THAT?

It also blew my mind upon playing Uru, when I learned that the book fell through the cosmos - into The Cleft, New Mexico.

That's the common theory, anyways.

Well... since Mass Effect, Dawn of War, and Assassins Creed have already been used, it is a tie between Call of Duty 2 & 4.

Not a chance. I'd put that as a contender for one of the worst openings in a videogame. There's no sense of tension at all. You die in the first ten minutes and then five minutes later you're all up and ready to go again. Nobody is fooled into thinking that Shep is really dead, so what's the point in opening up with that?

However, it would be perfect if used as an epilogue after the end of the first game. Then we would've had the rampant speculation and uncertainty that such a dramatic event should illicit, making your triumphant return at the start of the second game even more epic.

edit: One game opening I absolutely love is the one for Metal Gear Solid 2. Both the opening credits and the opening sequence of the game. I don't think many games have come close to marrying music and cutscene in such a fantastic way as this. It gets me every damn time.

Every opening pales in comparison to Persona 3 & 4.

Mass Effect 2's was okay, just not as good as these.

Not that it's an intro, but that section in RDR when you go to Mexico the first time I think is one of the best transition pieces in the history of gaming.

I give you, a masterpiece of an opening:

I know it's not the most loved game, but I've always loved the Final Fantasy VIII opening too.

Brian Cox is a god among actors.
By crushing the armies of our enemies, by seizing the weapons they thought to turn against us, we were fighting for our very existence! But, if there are those who would deny us peace, refuse us our rightful place in the universe, then, we will unleash such terrible vengeance, that generations yet unborn will cry out in anguish!

The Helghast might be genocidal maniacs run by insane madmen and political speakers, but goddamn they're awesome.
