John Petrucci of Dream Theater is amazing. He get's my vote. Although for sheer insanity, I'd have to say Michelangelo Battio.

Observe this clip, and marvel at the insanity that is Battio, as he plays a quad guitar solo.

Hmm, Part of me wants to say Cliff Burton, but even as great as he was, there are better. Malmsteen makes my list for speed and technicality, but I also love Randy Rhodes and Brendan Small (yeah, I went there).

Overall best is pretty much impossible to nail down.

EDIT: Oh, and SRV.

Oh wait I almost forgot... Eric Fucking Clapton. Seen him in concert and he can play any kind of music that uses a guitar.

Hard to pick the very best guitarist ever. They are all pretty much shine in their own way My personal favorite, Monte Montgomery. and Jeff Beck.

Hell, I knew a guy who was a friend of my dad's (and a friend of mine as well) who was just a 'local musician' and could play as well as some guys like Van Halen, Vai and Satch. No shit. He blew my mind being a Catholic family man from what could be considered a hick town and also being a PHENONMENAL guitar player.

Eddie made tapping famous, but I raise you by Stanley Jordan, the man who developed the technique! Also, he taps 2 guitars at once, which is totally sick.

Maybe because people don't find smashing the blues or Minor Pentationic scale that impressive. I know I don't.

while his tapping is impressive I'm not a big fan of his rendition of Stairway to Heaven...

so i was wandering just who is the greatest guitarist ever? it's so hard to decide. do you go for all round skill? or for influence? for me it's a toss up between joe satriani, steve vai and hendrix.
can anyone else shead some light here?
I was coming in here with every intention to call everyone out for not saying Steve Vai. I think that technically he's probably the very best player out there.

Zen, please stop going around dissing other peoples musical choices like you've been doing on this thread. It's becoming somewhat obnoxious, I have to say.
Bah..

When people start looking outside rock and metal for great guitarists then maybe.

If this thread was called "Your favorite guitarist ever, then I wouldn't have a problem, but alas, it is the greatest guitarist ever.
