Well, my personal favorite RPG is Golden Sun, but I wouldn't say it's the greatest ever.

So many JRPGs mentioned in this thread, I am sad. Not to mention all the NOT EVEN REMOTELY RPGs mentioned like Zelda.

Planescape: Torment, end of story. Still widely regarded as one of the best written games in existance, along side stuff like Grim Fandango.
