They did remake the Star Wars movies as gritty reboots. It was called Legacy of the Force and it was the worst thing since the Star Wars Holiday Special.
Is that a book series or a comic or something? I forget, it's a been a while since I've read Star Wars books.
Its a book series and it is terrible. If you plan on reading post Endor Star Wars Material, stop reading at The Unifying Force, and pick up again at the Legacy Comic Series.

The Dark Nest Trilogy, Legacy of the Force, and Fate of the Jedi are all garbage.
I tried reading the Dark Nest Trilogy but I just said "Frak it" after reading the New Jedi Order series. After the Vong a bunch of crappy bugs mean dick to me in terms of being a threat.
So like I said, just skip to Legacy. It deals with rebuilding a hundred years after the Vong War, and then the Sith, the Empire and what's left of the Galactic Alliance get thrown into a three way war with awesome results.

Captain Planet, seriously have the characters having split up and aged in real time since the tv. Then Maati has to go and around and re-unite them to save the day. Stuff like Wheeler lighting a ladies cigarette with his ring outside a casino or Kwami sinking milita bandits trying to steal medicine with his earth ring in Africa.

Can't really think of any movies but I know a ton of games and shows that need to stop being dipped in sissy sauce(*cough Final Fantasy cough*)

I honestly don't believe in gritty reboots, or reboots in general for that matter. Now if it's something like the aforementioned Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Grimm's Fairy Tales, where the original work was dark and gritty, but subsequent adaptations have watered it down, then yeah, a reboot with the express intent of bringing the adaptations in line with the source material is entirely justified; just keep your dark, gritty reboots out of my light, hopeful series, and we'll get along just fine.

[sub]For the record, the original TMNT comics rule, as do the uncensored fairy tales; I don't like it when a series is so dark that it's depressing, but I quite enjoy an occasional splash of darkness, as long as it isn't the only flavor of fiction available.[/sub]

They already made a gritty reboot of Ed Edd and Eddy, it's called The Movie.

I kid, but in an overwhelmingly comedic series, did the movie really need to cover themes of child abuse, abandonment, and the long term effects of bullying?

Well, it needed to wrap things up, and remember, at the time the core audience was much older and looked in for deeper plot, while still having that safe warm fuzzy familiar feeling. And alot of that was shown throughout the series itself, so it fit in.

They should re-do sesame street, and put it in the most run-down area of philidelphia.

Your command is impossible to follow.
That would be awesome
This would transcend the word badass.
"It's buttered toast time, *****."

OT:
I was about to say Courage the Cowardly Dog (one of my favorite childhood shows), but I think it was already gritty and weird enough. I need not say more than this image:

OT OT: Pokemon would be good, as well as Mortal Kombat, but they're already doing that.

Seconded. Many possibilities are open there.

In other news, to avoid any repeats, I think a gritty version of Code Lyoko would be interesting. Also Dexter's Lab (though admittedly, Snafu [http://ppg.snafu-comics.com/index.php?comic_id=82] and Fusion Fall [http://fusionfall.cartoonnetwork.com/splashpage.php] sort of have that covered already, but a TV series would be awesome). Also, Chaotix. They got close in a way, but I think to truly have something great they should have gone farther with the grittiness.

And maybe Codename Kids Next Door--that could be very interesting >:-D

Hungry-Hungry Hippos: "We're hungry. For JUSTICE!!" Shamefully stolen from Robot Chicken of course.

Actually, call me weird, but I'm a guy who would seriously watch a gritty-action remake of "My Little Pony." I imagine it would be kind of like He-Man, only will more shots of people/horses/things being impaled by unicorn-horns.
